  • Have you run a chkdsk on the HD i had a problem many years ago during a failed update, and if the hd has smart it may show some possible problems.
    Just an idea

Can you let me know how I can run a chkdsk on the HDD from Ubuntu? It has SMART, but I don't know if it's enabled.

  • Sorry I missed the bit where you said you can't access command prompt from F8. Do you have recovery console from F8 ? I would guess not . I am out this pm but I will have a look for other options when I return

Nah, no recovery console either. I was going to install it a few weeks ago but never got round to it.

  • I might have missed it, but what version of Windows do you have installed?

It's Windows XP Home edition SP3. It's an OEM edition that came with a T.Rex install disk, but (if I could get it to work) it would format the HDD and I can't afford to lose some of the work on there.

    Oh, well. Bitten the bullet.
Taken it to a shop to get it sorted. Mendin the Windows problem and installing 2 new hard-drives has been quoted at £70 (ish). They're under strict instructions not to format the HDD.
Does that sound about right? Did to me.
