Hi guys
Just been in the middle of installing an update and the computer rebooted and now won't start.
I've managed to stop the auto-reboot (it wouldn't do any of the Safe Mode boots, last known good or start normally).
The error I'm getting is :-
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78ED528 0XC0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000)
Any help greatly appreciated.
I'm currently on a borrowed laptop next to the PC

Try using your the repair option when booting with your Windows CD0
-
The only Windows CD I have is a wipe-disk, it will format the HDD when I insert it.
I haven't backed-up any data for a while and there's some stuff I can't afford to lose.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

use a live ubuntu CD to boot the Pc
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
will allow you to access the data on the hard disk and back up to cd or usbEx forum ambassador

Does that mean this is terminal?

Will a System Restore point be any good?
I've got a recovery disk made when I had Avanquest installed and I can get to restore points from that:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Just tried another safe mode boot and I've seen a message which reads:-
"Press ESC to cancel SPTD.SYS loading" or words to that effect.
Does that help?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

When the computer boots hold 'F8' - a menu should appear, then select 'boot from last known good configuration'
If that doesn't work, then from the same Boot Menu, try "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" Then at the prompt, type:-
(Windows XP)
%SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe
(Windows Vista)
%SystemRoot%\System32\rstrui.exe
EDIT - That error indicates (via Google) an inaccessible boot device which is why your computer isn't going any further than the post screen. Probably caused by a driver issue0 -
All the Safe Mode options give me apparent error with SPTD.SYS.
Last known good doesn't work either.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I've managed to boot from a USB stick with Xubuntu.
Apart from recovering files, can I run things like virus scans from installs on the HDD from this? If I can, can someone tell me how?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Using another PC:-
Download this from Avira.
http://dl.antivir.de/down/vdf/rescuecd/rescuecd.exe
Use it to burn a CD then bootup using that CD. You will then be able to scan the hard drive for viruses, using the latest Avira definitions. (The download above is always up to date).

Browntoa's advice is a more than workable starting point, and that's not guaranteed, your partition tables are in trouble, caused by Ashampoo or Daemon or whatever. There is a removal tool that works but only if you can boot into windows
If your old enough to be able to use the DOS commands and the tables are not too screwed you may be able to repair the partition and delete the *.sys file, depending on your O/S.
If you can't get into windows use any one of dozens of bootable CD's - I use Hirens - you will find it - and it's free.
In the end you will probably save a lot of grief by using Hirens & a USB stick to "" get off "" your important stuff off your hard drive and do a re-install, if however you have 50 DVD's it's a no no !
I'm assuming you updated your STPD without fully removing the old version.
