HoofeHearted - downloaded the file while I'm on here - can I burn it using my normal burner attached top the PC and if so, how?

Richie - can't boot to DOS (I don't think)from the XP options. Any ideas if that's possible? I didn't think I was updating SPTD.SYS at the time.

Morning. Just double click on the .exe once downloaded, it will then ask you to select a drive to burn the cd to and warn you if no cd is present. Put blank CD in the CD burner drive.
Then just click on the "Burn CD" button.:T
  • To help your understanding your Windows O/S thinks it has a C: [ hard ] drive and a D: [ DVD ] drive. The use of a virtual drive means that you may have up to whole (27) alphabet of drives, SPTD knows which one is the real one Windows does not. SPTD of course is corrupted so the whole thing is unworkable AFTER SPTD is loaded.

The least problematic is that stated above, the most is that the entire partition tables are screwed, even a re-format may not cure that. You may need to FDisk & then format & then re-install an O/S

In an earlier post you said "" Just tried another safe mode boot and I've seen a message which reads:-"Press ESC to cancel SPTD.SYS loading" or words to that effect "" If you can get back to this point and stop SPTD loading its probable that :

    - you can get into Windows
    - that your partitions are probably ok
    - your data is still there [ except any / all in Virtual Drives ]
    - you can use the tool I pointed you to to get rid of SPTD
    - and uninstall your Virtual Drive from Windows
    - and keep all your [ non-virtual ] data

"" Richie - can't boot to DOS "" you can from the Hirens CD I pointed you to at hiren dot info/pages/bootcd on the CD there are tools for repairing both 32 and NTFS drives & tables and tools for recovering lost and deleted data.

So if I download and burn the disk, which of the utilities would I need?
I assume it's one of the MBR ones, but I'm not too sure.

Or can I get to a DOS prompt from there?
