Do you Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools installed?

Don't delete sptd.sys yet until someone can confirm.

I've got PowerISO installed but not Alcohol or Deamon.
I've found SPTD.SYS in the file system at Windows/System32/Drivers

    Anyone any other info?
I need to get this sorted out a.s.a.p. I know I'll need a new DVD drive as this one appears to have bitten the dust, but I didn't think it would take out everything else as well.

    Can you disable SPTD.SYS

Go to control panel > Administrative tools > services
  • I know your heads-in-the-shed with this problem but you are not working logically from least to most destructive tests.

Attend to my 6 past 1 post first, stop SPTD loading and you may keep the lot.

Jump on the 1 armed bandit of overwriting the MBR and you may win or lose everything - and that is O/S dependant and I haven't even asked you which O/S you are using.

A driving instructor can teach sitting next to nellie with dual controls and stop you killing anything, but I'm not in your house in a position where I can stop you making a non-reversible mistake.

    so :-

    - stop the SPTD loading
    - if not possible
    - get your data off via Hirens for starters

rmg1, I've explained from my first post exactly what caused your problem, how can you now say "" found SPTD.SYS in the file system at Windows/System32/Drivers ""

    - have you now managed to get into windows ?
    - did you do that by disabling the SPTD loading ?
    - if you did why didn't you use the removal tool I pointed you to ?
    - your DVD is ok if you think it's the DVD pull both cables out and boot the machine

We are all in the ether, we each have to decide whom we trust, anonymity makes us that way, I don't for one minute blame you for not trusting me !

Get your head out of that shed, attend to the SPTD and get on with the rest of your very big round lifetime.

    It's virtual drives & SPTD.sys

I can't get into Windows, I used Xubuntu to boot the machine and then used the file manager on there to find SPTD.SYS. The DVD drive won't read or write anything, so that's up the spout as well.

  • I can't speak for Xubuntu, but Hirens will do a full install to a stick, a walkthrough here: hiren dot info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk

You will need [ it tells you where ] Hirens v10.1 & WinSetupFromUSB & grub4dos, make it, test it, then copy the removal tool from :

    duplexsecure dot com/en/downloads

onto the root of the bootable Hirens USB stick, then boot your broken machine with Hirens, go into Virtual Windows and run the removal tool.

    BUT

? You may be able to do this by copying the Removal Tool into your version of Xunbuntu, booting the running the Removal Tool

? If you can see the SPTD.SYS with Xunbuntu just rename all copies of it to 0SPTD.SYS - your registry will still be screwed but it won't load and it's a starting point

I looked at renaming the file from Xubuntu but it doesn't give me the option. I'll download the Hirens disc here an burn to CD (I'm at work)

    ::edit::

    I've foudn this page :-
    http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk
for the USB drive stuff, but where do I get the disc download itself from?
