    OK - just tried to build the USB stick and got no-where.
    I've got all the files I need on it (followed the instructions to the letter) and it won't boot up using it (it's a 2GB stick).
    I've got Xubuntu on a 1GB stick and that boots OK.

  • You may have dropped a clanger with your USB creation, it's easy done, have a look at what's on the stick you should have :

    FILES CALLED autorun, bootcd, gldr, menu.1st, and the exe file I pointed you to (SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD) layer) removal tool

    FOLDER CALLED HBDC that 's the folder off the CD

    .1 So you create the USB bootable with [USB format, Grub, and the MENU system, then ;

    .2 You copy the HBDC folder from the Hiren's CD ( yes just copy it nothing more ) to the stick

    A 2 gig stick is more than big enough to put the lot on including the SPTD removal exe. The menu1st will point to the HBDC folder and it will run in USB exactly as it would run in a DVD drive.

    On the data-stick I have.....
    Files :-
    Autorun
    Boot CD
    grldr
    grubinst
    grubinst_gui
    menu.lst
    Windows Menu

    There's also a folder called HBCD with loads of files in it.
    Can I put the removal tool on the root of the drive as well, or would that be better in it's own folder somewhere else?

  • How the hell did these three get onto the USB ?

    grubinst
    grubinst_gui
    Windows Menu

    Can I put the removal tool on the root of the drive as well, or would that be better in it's own folder somewhere else?

    - Yes no reason why not !

    Now [ even though the 3 above shouldn't be on the stick ] does it boot ?

    No, it still doesn't boot, although the Xubuntu distro I have on another stick boots just fine, so it's not the USB option in BIOS

    No other CD-burner availabel. I've done more research and possibly found a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 that will boot from USB. I'm going to give that a try and see what happens.

    OK - managed to boot from an Ubuntu USB stick and renamed SPTD.SYS to 0SPTD.SYS.
    Still no joy with booting, it looks like it's failing on something else but can't see what. . Tried another safe-mode boot (both command prompt and networking) but still no joy.
    Any other suggestions?

    ::edit::

    I've had a wander round the HDD using Ubuntu, and found an old registry backup from last September. is there any way of installing that over the top of the current registry to see if it will clear the problems?

    Just a quick thought - every once in a while while using the xubuntu/Ubuntu data sticks, the screen start looping and the mouse stops responding.
    I'll be trying a new mouse later today, but could that be causing the problem?
