Another ( maybee coincidence ) whilst i had no conection somebody called my house & after i just put the phone down my conection returned !
Please somebody advise because i really havent got the stomach for AOL again

Your aware you need to use 'microfilters' for every phone in the house yes? And that even if you do its possible one may be faulty?

Also, defenders not supposed to be turned off by default but I believe thats a seperate issue

    Connected wirelessly or hardwired (Ethernet)?

Lets look at the running, but I doubt its your computer (Ideally it would be easiest if you could borrow another laptop to determine if its your computer or a fault elsewhere)

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Still not clear if the OP is connecting by wireless or ethernet (just reference to 'new router and cables')? If the former, you need to make a temporary ethernet connection to rule out any wireless issues.
OP, an ethernet cable is also known as a network cable, it's the cable (often yellow) that connects your router to your PC, if you are using wireless, an ethernet cable will have still been supplied with your router.
Assuming the problem is not wireless related, I would retest from the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate, that will rule out extension wiring issue. Test this way using your existing ADSL filter and then with another one.
No point in tearing your hair out blaming AOL until you have eliminated internal wiring problems or a fault on the line. If the latter, you need to speak to your line rental supplier.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • macman....iam connected wireless & whilst setting up the lap top wirelesly the instructions via the cd which came with the new router instructed me at a certain stage to conect the yellow cable to my laptop which i did do & i got a mesage that everything was correct.
got connected this morning ok for the first time in a while

    thanks

  • The reason iam annoyed at AOL is the way they actually ''try'' and help...its obvious they are reading from instructions on screen and i was speaking to the guy and he kept saying wait a min i have to put you on hold
i just think there customer service is terible & apart from that i strugle to actualy understand there accent

OK, so reconnect the ethernet cable if the problem recurs, if it goes away, it is just a wireless issue. If not, follow the other steps suggested.
I suspect that it is not a wireless issue, but you need to eliminate all the possible causes in turn.
Any problem with your phone line, (noise, crackling?) Try the BT Quiet Line test: dial 17070, select QT option and listen for noise on the line. Do this from the BT test socket, not from an extension.
