I'm a teacher and i understand giving your child a name that means something but i have soooo many on my NO list i'm going to run out of names!! However i always look out for the oddest spelt names on the register, i dispair when i see beautiful names hacked up with extra k's or spelt like they sound!

    Nicos for me!!

I did some SEN work a while back and one of the girls was called Klo-ee. I nearly wet myself when I read it.

When I see an unusual spelling of a common name I assume the parents are illiterate.

Yes I think this too. What really confuses me is people who add extra letters into a name, I know a girl called Aleighciah (pronounced al-e-cia) her surname has 10 letters as well!! She thinks her name has a ridiculous spelling and hates giving it out over the phone as she always has to spell it.

My first name, Leah and surname are both really simple yet I still have to spell these out every phonecall I make - I think people have got used to so many stupid spellings they assume everyone's is spelt differently.

    Hi,

Im due to have a little boy soon, I already have one boy called Yannis so trying to find a name that will go with it, so far have come up with Nicos or Zayden do you like any of these ?

Do you have any suggestions ?

    thanks

Havent read all the posts but im sure most readers have assured you that they are both naff chavtastic names,,,especially Zayden. Makes him sound like Mork from Ork. Nicos...? Ok if you happen to be Greek i suppose??
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Thats a lovely name! Not chavvy or illiterate parents at all!

My DS name is a tradional name but there are 3 spellings, so even with a 'regular' name, a lot of people still have to spell it out

You are in error as you missed, in your readiness to go off on a rant, the fact that the OP does indeed have Greek heritage.

You are also in error that our Continental cousins do not favour foreign-sounding names. I have three German cousins and between them they have six children and not one of them has a "traditional" German name. English names appear to be quite popular in Germany but French ones also make an appearance too.

I agree totally - this is the kind of tripe spouted by someone who thinks presumably that everyone born here should be swaddled in a St George's flag and called, oh, Colin (no, too irish)? Peter (no - that's of greek origin) Joshua (no, is actually from Yeshua) Michael (no - from Mikaelos) John/Ian/Ewan/Euan/Iain (nope, they're foreign) James (nope - foreign) Jack (nope, that's foreign) Arthur (nope, from Artorus, which is Latin, so foreign)

Well actually, you'd probably find that all popular traditional names have a foreign root from fairly recent times.

Unless you would like to try seeing how Canute goes in the playground or perhaps Ethelred, Caractacus or something else a bit more early 'English'?

The OP has chosen fine names. So this person should go and post their meanness somewhere else.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Only you will know what is right for you, and more importantly when you look at the little one.

Personally I wanted to call my baby Xander, but she came out a girl, so that one had to be shelved!
