  • thank you , one and all, for your replies. I have got the message about FRONTING, don't do it,9 altho with the high initial price, you can see why people are tempted.
My son has his £11k (inheritance) and only because of this, we will go thru, with the purchase of the 2008 Fiesta. I like you Diesell, have tried so many, that i begin to lose track, putting the same info every time, very frustrating. The latest one from Liverpool and Victoria came about at just under £2500, but funny it was cheaper with just my son and no named drivers. I will phone them up on Monday. Your £1500 quote seems actually very good in context , bearing in mind, mark you, the age of the car. As for PASS PLUS, some say it makes a very big difference , some say it only makes about £200. The curux of the matter is, there is no cheap insurance out there for a 17 year old male driving his own car. I will have to accept that. At least the NCD hopefully will build up for the future.
  • Just tried 17 to 40 (enersesl....) and came out for me £3000, pass place would have knocked off £300, only. If i could find someone to do i for £2000ono, i'd take it, any working insce folk out there who can give a quote to beat £2600. My wife has just tried putting in a peugot107, and it comes with £2100, so the car does make a difference

because insurance companies like to spread their risk and only want a certain number of young drivers in each type of car. As they get closer to this target they begin to load the policies.

How much would the Insurers load their policies for having this many young drivers and a mini?

My advice would be to buy a cheap car for the first year or two.

Might be worth trying the specialists who advertise in the back of max power (or whatever mags exist now).
    Adrian Flux
    Greenlight
    etc

    just spotted,
    yes
HIC and Liverpool Victoria also worth a try
    Happy chappy

When I was 18 Norwich Union were the cheapest for me at £1900 and that was including a £1000.00 discount for doing the pass plus

A car that is worth much much less and Pass Plus will bring it down a bit but probably not much. It might be worth finding out whether he can start having lessons towards doing his advanced driving test but I think they might want him to have a bit more experience.

I would lean towards the fact your high risk, 17 year old son is driving around in an as good as new car. Try doing a quote with the exact same details (him as main driver, no fronting now) with a 2001 1.25Lx Fiesta which would cost circa £1000 and see the difference

edit - im 21 male, and have been driving since I was 17. Back then my first car was a 1994 1.4Corsa, £1300 TPFT. When I completed pass plus Norwich Union rebated me £400. At 21 I now drive a 2.0DTi Astra, and with my fiancee on there we pay £450 a year FC, he might just have to stump up for the first year, with 1 NCB his insurance will halve or more, especially from £2500.

Another thing to try is to get an older (30+) female on there as named driver, insurers dont like men full stop, they only like women, even though all they do is crash into parked cars :rotfl:
  • Just to remind you Angelic, this is from cash left for him by his granddad (£10k). It should not have be used until he was 18, but he has badgered us into giving him the money in advance. We are weak in giving way and certainly we would not be contemplating giving him so much if it was our money. Thanks, i have seen the student forum before, i think, from that forum we can say that 'fronting' is quite widespread. Although obviously, if there is only one car involved and the parent IS the main driver, then that is legit, although then possibly the NCD is not earned unless you are with Direct Line or some specific others, where named drivers also get the NCD. In retrospect another car, other than the Fiesta ought to have been considered as my son's first car and also he should have waited until he was at least 18, until he got his first car
