First of all, DO NOT FRONT. If your son does more miles than you in the car, he is the main driver, and your insurance is null and void (hit something, cause a claim, you have to pay all of it + you get 3 points for driving without insurance...).

    That's 6-8 points actually ;)

get him in for his Pass Plus. i did that straight after i passed my test. it took 1 day and it knocked about 35-40% of my quotes. it isnt a test, its a course, so he cant fail. its best to do it with his regular instructor as they know him and has probs seen him drive in most weather, so all that will be left to do is motorway driving. well worth the £100 or so for the discounts you will get. he will get a certificate with a 4 digit pin. that pin is what the insurers need. honestly its well worth it, til he builds up his no claims.
  • I dont have any advice on where to go for better prices, but if you/he can afford it then pay up and get him his own no claims bonus. I have been a named driver for the last 3 years (22 now) and for me to take insurance in my own right on a 998cc 1998 Nissan Micra it is still over £1000 as I have no NCB but have been driving on a daily basis with no accidents or losses for 3 years!

That's what happens with fronting. You can't have the penny and the bun ;)

    Whose car is it?
Do they do those miles every day?
Do they have another car as well?

It is their car on the V5 and legal owner. No they have no other car and they do the miles most days (quite long distances) whereas I use it around town when they dont need it, and it is their only car. I dont know why you feel the need to ask me to justify myself to you, but i'm bored so I will humour you :o

Fair enough, but your initial post implied you might have been fronting ;)

Kwaks, he is full time student in the lower 6th at school, i don' think i can be creative with that, the car we have paid a deposit for is in hardly "high risk", area, i would have thought, ie 1.2 fiesta, 2008. I did try editing with a 2005 sciento and didn't come up much cheaper. The pass plus, someone told me, they may knock off £200 but hardly pays for the course (altho it should make you better driver)

You miss the point, a fiesta is high risk when combined with a young driver, as is a corsa, a clio etc etc. This is because insurance companies like to spread their risk and only want a certain number of young drivers in each type of car. As they get closer to this target they begin to load the policies. The key is to have a car which few others of that age have looked at, so the policy available isnt loaded.
Agreed school is high risk as increases the chance of him having mates in car and potentially "showing off", in addition free periods etc would increase the times he would take the vehicle on the road (remember commuting is necessary).
When I worked in insurance (intermediary, incidently owned by ford) we would give an equivalent discount to 1 yrs NCB to a new driver of a Ford who took pass plus. Considerably more value than £200 ;)

I know how frustrating it is pconstable, my son is 17 (18 in February). Passed his test in October and just finished his pass plus course today.
I look on these forums to see if anyone comes up with good insurance companies.
Every night you fill the quote forms in online, just to receive crazy results at the end.
He would like a Corsa around a 99/2000 plate, he will be the main driver with my wife, a named driver, with pass plus, I got a quote with a company called 17 to 40 for £1500.
Also a company called I Kube might be worth a look, I haven't phoned them up yet, but with them you must not use the car between 11-00pm and 5-00am (they put a device in your car).
