    Try taking the pole out
    Pull it towards you

Is it still square or are there signs of wear ?

The latch is b*ggered no question forget (the wee silver thing)
  • Ok the wee silver pole is perfectly square.

Should I try cutting a coke bottle and sticking it in?

Ok if you've not got a smaller adjustable spanner or pliers, lets get the handle to work.
I think before the 'pole' may have been cut short and worked itself in, so the handle isn't in touch with it.
So pull out the poll, only an extra inch or two, it still needs to be in contact with the mechanism, now refit the handle, just loosley will do, see if you can turn it now.

  • i would try putting a fair bit of force on the spindle and wobble the door at the same time incase the latch has snagged somehow.
after that i guess gripping the spindle with a spanner and knocking it with a hammer.

from how you've described it you wont be able to get to the hinges or access the latch so i'd put some real sweat into the above.
  • Ok going to try these things. You have no idea how much I appreciate your help!

I just kept running at it and was in serious danger of knocking myself out!!

    Will be back.............

cut the bottle so you end up with a small flat square approx 10x20cm then slid it between the door and the frame you should be able to wiggle the latch back.
