I'm afraid that is the risk you take when buying a used vehicle, i bought a 9 year old nissan sunny in jan 08 from a local garage, MOT done and passed a week before i paid for the car.
Jan 09 i put it through MOT and it failed the whole bottom was rusted the garage i bought it from did a cowboy job and put it through MOT in 08 before selling bit to me.
The total cost of repairs was almost over the amount i paid for it hence i scraped it.
All through last year i used a friends car who was working abroad, now i'm back into used car market for another car lol:(

Thanks for that. Anyone know a good trustworthy, female-friendly mechanic in Hertfordshire then? ;)

I'll bet you a pound to a penny you've got a relative, friend, workmate, or neighbour who already knows the answer to that......

All you have to do is ask!! :D

Ok, I'm sorry that I'm no brakes expert, blimey! :(

I will list all the parts if that will help.

    In the parts it quotes:
oil filter; roller; vbelt; repair kit; parts kit; rubb mount; spray jet; buffer; wheel cylinders; set of brake; brake shoe; pollen fil; switch; brake disc; screen wash; bulb; bulb; screw; hell helix.

it still seems far too much.

out of interest, how much did they charge for the bulbs?

parts i know from your list, oil filter-£3. cambelt kit £60-£70,rubber mounts and bushes £25,brake pads discs and shoes-£40 - £50,pollen filter £9.
bulbs would be dependant on which bulb but at most if its headlight could be got for £5,brake light bulbs 50p. screen wash can be got for £2 or £3 from anywhere.
    ...work permit granted!

Did you look under the car when you bought it?

Its not always someone elses fault you know.

Those prices are pretty similar to mine to be honest, the parts cost 312.46 in total, the labour 774.78, then 193.42 VAT.

Bulbs were two rear indicator bulbs...8.72 for the labour to fit those, and the price of them was 5.16.
