It's so hard to know who to trust!! And you want to feel safe in your first car.

Thats 100% correct, and of course, as we've all got female friends in the same boat we appreciate that.

It's the same as plumbing, joinery, sparks etc; find someone you can trust, usually through word of mouth, and stick to them like glue!

Dont feel too bad, you're not the first person who have made the mistake of thinking main dealers would be above unfair pricing and practices...and you wont be the last!!

    Good Luck. :D

In short... I can appreciate being unhappy that you have bought the car and you've now had to shell out for repairs - but I do not think you have been sold a lemon. Sadly much worse things could have happened, and could still happen in the near to distant future, and it would not be the responsibility of the original seller as the faults did not exist then. Things do go wrong with cars sadly and they need repairs. Not that I wish to scare you, but there are plenty more expensive things that *could* fail on it.

The only way you can avoid the costs of repairs is to buy new. But even then, you would have to fork out for brake pads and discs etc and cam belt as they are considered wear and tear and not covered by warranty.

    That's really helpful, thankyou.

Sorry...it's a Skoda dealer, not VW, is that still the same then?
Skoda is owned by VW. Many of the parts in your car are VW one's and it is based on a VW Polo. The umbrella group is called Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG for short) and covers those brands, and I believe Porsche, Bugatti, Skoda, and probably one or two others.

Thanks for that. Anyone know a good trustworthy, female-friendly mechanic in Hertfordshire then? ;)

The dealer is talking utter crap.

Firstly there comment about cambelts - absolutely nothing to do with an MOT. A Cambelt could be seconds away from snapping and destroying the engine and still pass an MOT

All the brake parts are wear and tear and tbh in a 10 year old car that you put 3000 miles on are entirely fair.

The list of work completed and the price are utter ludicrous. The Dealer saw you coming and have no doubt taken advantage.

I am not convinced that a small back street garage couldnt have given it an Service, CAM belt change and the brake components all for less than £500 quid

You have been entirely ripped off and any small claim court claim would be a complete waste of your cash and time.
