Soooo many other countries to fit in between now and then!

How do peoples work deal with someone being off because their kids are ill? At the moment we are supposed to take it as holiday (which I think is a cheek TBH!) but hopefully soon we will be setting up on our own and I would be interested in the different ways of dealing with absence because of child illness.
The non salary staff can take as a holiday if they want to get paid, or else it just counts as an extra day off and no pay
I am not bothered about appointments and christmas plays and the like, my assistant can have those whenever she wants them (but would be interesting to see how others deal with them) but sickness is a bit different and I do feel that it should be included on your emplyment record in some way...
I think it should be included somewhere or else people take the pi$$. Its very easy for some to phone up and claim child illness because they CBA, we had one girl like that
I won't get paid if I don't go in, no holiday, sickness or anything other than going to work pay for me but I want to be fair on any staff I will be employing.
Offer to pay as holiday is fair I think, or option to lose pay
Congrats to SM SIL and welcome to baby Aiden.
Oh and YAY for walking Erin

Unpaid emergency dependents leave, MFDMadDogWoman wrote: »MFD - I'd probably want it marked down as Emergency Parental Leave like Elles linkie above.
I think where I work it would just go down as unpaid leave.
Ah - I am not sure I am happy with it being unpaid...although I guess I might live to regret it!! Would I be within my rights (as an employer) to do say, 2 days full pay, 3 days half pay, then unpaid?
As an employer I would be interested when I employ someone in their sick record but also if they have had lots of time off with a sickly child tooplease listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -

MFD - We've either had to take unpaid parental leave, a days annual leave or if we have the flexi available, use that.
They're quite relaxed about it and it's up to us to choose what to use.
SM - I'm nosey and had to go and look too - Ewwww, put them away. And congrats to SIL and Aunty & Uncle Searchie!
Three2b - Congrats and welcome.

It doesn't have to be unpaid, you can include paid ED conditions in the employment contract, but where I work it's unpaid, iyswim
Our reference requests now include a question "how many PL days have they had" but no mention of how many ED days. We have different codes on our absence recording system though for the diff things so could answer the question if asked.
You have to know "how many PL days" because you only get 13 weeks to take in so long*, and they cross employment, so if you've had 10 in one job in the period*, you can't switch jobs and take another 7, you've only got another 3 to take. Does that make sense? (* = "i don't know!" times)

MFD, we are allowed 5 days a year I think of emergency parental leave, max of 2 days in a row where we still get paid. If however it isnt an emergency eg. a school play or dentist appt etc.. and we have no holidays left then it is unpaid parental leave, and after the 5 days are used it is all unpaid after that if it cant be booked as holidays
That doesnt make as much sense as I want it to ...The two best things I have done with my life
