found money in cashpoint

When I was a young teenager, I needed some cash out to buy myself a walkman, went to the cashpoint and found £20 on the floor, in the bank.
I handed it in to the customer service desk and never thought anymore about it, they took my details and thanked me. 6 months later I had a later saying I could claim the £20 back as no-one claimed it, I got a bunch of carnations a few days later thanking me for my honesty!
I would certainly hand it in, OP, think about how you would feel if you had a lot on your mind and made an error like this, you would be hoping someone would hand it in, wouldn't you.
I know not many of us could afford to lose money, could you afford to lose the amount of money you found?
Hand it in to the police or the bank you found it at, but please do hand it in, as I am sure you have already done.0 -
A few years ago I also found £200 at a cashpoint, I handed it to the police and let the bank know. It was never claimed so I got it back and then donated it to charity. I would still hand it in if I found some today, not sure I would still donate it though.0

£100 for you and £100 for the Haiti appeal perhaps? I think I would.0 -
If you take it to the police rather than the bank, they'll give it back to you after xx months AIUI if it is unclaimed. In theory at least.0

I would have kept it. And unlike some, im honest.
I think your first statement erodes any credibility that your second might otherwise have.
Tempting though the possibility of some "free" money might be...why on earth would an individual choose to commit an act that could have serious consequences for their future. Eg. what rational employer would hire somebody with a criminal record for dishonesty - specifically, as a thief? Even the law recognises that there is a big difference between finding a small sum lying on the street and a meaningful sum found lodged in a cashpoint machine.
And that is aside from any moral considerations which, surely, would compel any decent person to hand the money in to the bank.
Moreover, I'm far from being a saint but, personally, I couldn't live with the guilt of keeping this money.0 -
I found a tenner in the cashpoint a few months ago. I looked around for the bloke who was using it before me but he had gone.
I just put it in my purse and walked off.
I couldn't keep £200 though, that would weigh on my conscience too much.0 -

i went to use a cashpoint today and before i put my card in, the machine beeped, and money came out. i realised it must have been the person who used the machine before me, so i took it out. but as i turned round, no one was there. i kept the money, but am feeling bad about it. im thinking that i should go and hand it into the bank tomoz (the cashpoint was part of the bank) and there is cctv there, so im worried i will get into trouble aswell if i keep it.
what would you do. and does anyone know if i do keep it, if i will get caught and in trouble. i feel bad its someone elses money, but it was their stupid fault for leaving it, and i found it. i could really be doing with the money anyway. please help
Ok help is at hand ! Why not go back to the other forums and copy and paste a much better fairytale as this one has done the rounds soooo many times ! Talk about dumb !0 -

The bank isn't going to chase you up for £10 but £200 is worth chasing someone for.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I've read the first post and I would take it into the bank and explain the situation. I found some money a few years ago in the same way and took it straight into the bank. The guy who "lost" the money was good enough to send me a cheque for £30 for handing the money in! Not bad considering it was only £50...Total debt at lightbulb moment (Jan 2010): £23410
Target for Dec 2011: £17000
Lloyds - Early Jan: £[STRIKE]2040[/STRIKE] Feb: £[STRIKE]2050[/STRIKE] Mar: £0
Other Lloyds @ highest: £9800 Feb: £9800
Current debt: £234200
