If you don't like their service, go somewhere else.
Aren't you feeling special.
1. I know nationwide aren't a bank I never said they were
2. I didn't have a problem with a minimum cash withdrawl it was the maximum cash withdrawl that I did
3. I haven't been with Nationwide since that day... but even though I requested to close the account they still said I had to make the withdrawl over seven separate working days.
Hence the cross legged "call the bloody police then" approach.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Hi
Whilst I did chuckle at this thread I must agree, it awful that banks are doing this, really distgusting.
But considering the government are doing the same with the poorest of people in the country I'm not surprised the banks are getting away with it!
Asylum seekers in the uk are being given Azure cards. Each monday they get £35 on these cards to feed and cloth their families, if by the sunday evening the full amount hasn't been spent it goes back to the home office.
The card can only be used in a relatively small number of stores (Tesco Asda etc) and do not allow access to cash i.e cashpoint use. Begging the question what if you needed to pay for a haircut or perhaps buy furniture from a second hand/ charity retailer? Never mind how to save any money for a purchase over £35?
The home office also limits what card users are buying.
Before anyone slates me I do understand that the government cannot simply hand out cash to everyone and anyone, but people are here seeking asylum, to escape deprivation and the majority of these people have had a hard enough time.
sorry am ranting ...
will stop now!
It's amazing these asylum seekers don't want to stay in the third world backward countries known as France and Germany isn't it? They are desperate to get to The UK.0 -
YesFor the record I am not an asylum seeker (nor do i work for the home office) I have had dealings with these cards and have an opinion, thats all.0

YesFrom £6 at a cashier's desk to nomenclature, the banking industry and immigration. Funny in a way.0

I said I only want 6 pounds, she said, sorry, we dont do that anymore. I can't believe the only place where you can withdraw small sums of your own money, they have stopped and not advertised this very well.
When I complained to the manager she said it is because other customers have complained about the length of queues of people withdrawing 50p. This is complete discrimination and makes no sense. There is not an ATM for change? So they are holding our money captive!!!
I think the people that are withdrawing huge amounts at least have the opportunity to spend it on their card without the risk of being mugged and are more likely to be fraud suspect than 50p withdrawers. At least they have protection....I dont believe the banks lame excuse.
I think its a conspiracy......we have to legally get paid into a bank, then they don't dish out our money like it's their own. They have us trapped thanks to the payment systems and now are taking advantage of customers. They are also, creating obstacles for poorer people out of pleasure it seems.
It made me think about the situation further, how would you then have access to your 50ps? you would have to spend on your debit card. Which made me then think of the card retailers that accept small amounts as payments.
Big companies that dont have a minimum spend on a card, generally are more expensive than other retailers. They would benefit from this and have an edge over those smaller retailers that have a minimum spend of 5 pound. If you've only got 4.65 and you need cigarettes who are you going to choose?
The other obstacle for pooerer people when spending on your card, is running the account with low funds. When you spend on your card, the banks have a chance that you may mess up and go overdrawn giving them the chance to fine 30-90 charges to the account for a measly 1.50. Large retailers often can take upto three days for amounts to be shown on accounts, creating havoc in the balancing of funds.
To think the government is allowing this?
Maybe they too are involved, so that every consumer can be monitored in what they spend on day to day as part of a huge Market Research and information collectiion scheme. If they know what we buy they can predict what we would like and the decisions we make. Enabling Marketing efforts to be more persuasive and encourage spending!......maybe thats the new government strategy out of the recession?
Governments also have the power of freezing your account.
Another thought about why, they would allow banks to with-hold your spare change.......
Is it because the strength of the pound is predicted to fall so much that it is pretty much worthless?
Are saving money by not making money anymore, therefore spare change will be obselete? All money, will just be a matter of units in a database...and this is supposed to be a measure to reduce fraud???

What complete piffle.
People who seek asylum are fleeing from persecution, not deprivation.
There is a clear and distinct difference between an asylum seeker and an economic migrant.
Being skint is NOT a valid reason to come to the UK and seek asylum, being persecuted because of their race, skin colour or religeous beliefs generally is.0 -
Do what? Pay for (most) goods and services, yes.
Get cash - no - not with Santander. Some other banks yes. Some (not all) of those banks impose a minimum withdrawal at the Post Office.0 -
Can I just ask a question please?
While accepting that the OP is probably a troll, the fact remains that some banks have a minimum withdrawal amount. What if the amount you have in your account is less than this? Assuming you need the cash and can't use a card - kid's dinner money for example.

My advice to anyone in this position with an account at Santander is close it and open one elsewhere.
Specifically, at a branch of NatWest which has one of the new Cash Deposit Machines. These allow you to deposit coins into your account but the machines can also allow you to withdraw cash in coins, although this function is not currently enabled. There is little information available about when this facility will be working but it has been mentioned on other threads on MSE. I would assume that, once this is working, NatWest may prevent small withdrawals at the counter in the same way as Santander.
Or you could write a letter to the CEO of Santander UK suggesting that they install the same machines. Good luck.0
