Can I withdraw my 6 pound please? ....."NO"

Dont-pick-on-the-poor.
I went into Abbey (or now known as Santander....a totally different bank to Abbey, who I joined with) today and I thought, I need some money for parking and to post a letter and I said can I have 6 pounds please.....she said NO, we dont give out any money less than 30 pounds now, You'll have to go to the cash mashine ans withdraw 10 pound, then come back and I'll change it for you.
I said I only want 6 pounds, she said, sorry, we dont do that anymore. I can't believe the only place where you can withdraw small sums of your own money, they have stopped and not advertised this very well.
When I complained to the manager she said it is because other customers have complained about the length of queues of people withdrawing 50p. This is complete discrimination and makes no sense. There is not an ATM for change? So they are holding our money captive!!!
I think the people that are withdrawing huge amounts at least have the opportunity to spend it on their card without the risk of being mugged and are more likely to be fraud suspect than 50p withdrawers. At least they have protection....I dont believe the banks lame excuse.
I think its a conspiracy......we have to legally get paid into a bank, then they don't dish out our money like it's their own. They have us trapped thanks to the payment systems and now are taking advantage of customers. They are also, creating obstacles for poorer people out of pleasure it seems.
It made me think about the situation further, how would you then have access to your 50ps? you would have to spend on your debit card. Which made me then think of the card retailers that accept small amounts as payments.
Big companies that dont have a minimum spend on a card, generally are more expensive than other retailers. They would benefit from this and have an edge over those smaller retailers that have a minimum spend of 5 pound. If you've only got 4.65 and you need cigarettes who are you going to choose?
The other obstacle for pooerer people when spending on your card, is running the account with low funds. When you spend on your card, the banks have a chance that you may mess up and go overdrawn giving them the chance to fine 30-90 charges to the account for a measly 1.50. Large retailers often can take upto three days for amounts to be shown on accounts, creating havoc in the balancing of funds.
To think the government is allowing this?
Maybe they too are involved, so that every consumer can be monitored in what they spend on day to day as part of a huge Market Research and information collectiion scheme. If they know what we buy they can predict what we would like and the decisions we make. Enabling Marketing efforts to be more persuasive and encourage spending!......maybe thats the new government strategy out of the recession?
Governments also have the power of freezing your account.
Another thought about why, they would allow banks to with-hold your spare change.......
Is it because the strength of the pound is predicted to fall so much that it is pretty much worthless?
Are saving money by not making money anymore, therefore spare change will be obselete? All money, will just be a matter of units in a database...and this is supposed to be a measure to reduce fraud???
Please see the clip on youtube titled: Mary Poppins on Bank Stability as it will not allow me to post the link.

NoI remember when I was 15, and the only account I had was a Nationwide Savings account with a Cash Card. They wouldn't (nationwide...) give me a normal account until I was 16.
So I sold some stuff on eBay that I found in my attic (an antique Commodore Pet 2001 that I refurbished) and got £700 paid into my Nationwide account which I went into branch to withdraw.
They said I could only withdraw £100 a day and would have to take it out over the course of seven working days.
I politely requested that I hear confirmation of this rule from a manager, which I did, so I sat down, cross legged, and proclaimed that I am not moving until I have my money.
They threatened to call the police, so I advised "Please do, and you can explain why you are refusing to give me what is legally mine!".
They then handed over my cash.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Though I was told, that this could be seen as Money Laundering, It was also lucky, that I had that amount of money in the account. Surely, However,to reduce the queues it would just be quicker to do it all in one transaction?0 -

No because most people wouldn't bother going back.
Also OP, can I ask, why didn't you pay on card at the Post Office?0 -

There are only 1 or 2 people here that work for banks, none of which have replied on this thread.
Sometimes I feel as though people complain too much.
As already asked, why did you not pay on your card at the Post Office?0 -

Close your account, withdraw your £6 and open a new bank account elsewhere.
I do not have pity for banks, but customers moaning about small things in life and trying to claim money over laughable claims gets tiring.
No, I do not work in a bank.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
