Plastering question (External corners)

Hi Im about to plaster a external corner in one of my rooms but I am unable to get the angle bead to stick to the wall. I can not nail it as there is nothing for the nails to fix to underneath and therefore do not hold.

I have read you can use a small skim coat of plaster to hold it but dont like the sound of this plus dont really want to stand and hold it there whilst it dries.

Any ideas people?

Are you doing a base coat and skim, or just skim?

Eitherway you put a few dabs of plaster on either side of the corner, and bed the beading on this. It will stay where it is. Then get a spirit level and make sure the beading is vertical in both directions. Because you haven't nailed it in position, you can move it about to make sure it is truely vertical.

Finally, and very important, take your trowl and make sure non of the plaster you have used sticks up above the bead, otherwise it will be above your finished surface and you will have to sand it back.

Leave it for at least half a day and the beading will be set in place rock solid.

Its a skim coat, Ill give this a wirl, just hope it holds it.. Trouble is the edge is not a vertical wall its a 45degree wall going up to a ceiling, is this going to make a difference?

sounds like a dog legged thimney stack when you say 45 degree wall. ( I assume the angle the bead is going on is 90 degrees)
Like suggested above, mix a little plaster (nice and thick though) and stick on with that. Also as suggested above make sure you scrape the excess away, shouldn't take half day to dry though, in fact prob less than an hour.
    Have you skimmed before?

Ive just popped over to the house in my lunch break to tryed the plaster trick to stick it and problem is the walls arn't straight so the angle bead doesnt sit flush enough.

Now im a perfectionist and know if i leave the bead on slight proud in areas its going to show once i skim.

Any tips for skimming without using a bead?

When the bead is on, if you can put your trowel on the raised bit of the bead and the wall withought it touching the perforated bit of the bead you'll be ok.
How far out are the walls??

You can doctor the bead a bit with tin snips.

how confident are you with a trowel? I use what I call a "twicher", basically an external corner trowel - VERY RARELY USE THIS, Use the internal twicher a lot though.
