Ah gutting, that was one the best things. I went at end of sep/beg of oct last year, here's a copy paste from another post where someone else asked for ideas:

    Transport:
We used the Airtrain and LIRR train to get to/from Manhattan and JFK, it was a heck of a lot quicker and cheaper than a taxi. The easiest way to get round Manhattan is by walking but if you are travelling a fair distance north or south then use the subway. I created a google map of all the places we wanted to see them grouped them up by location/number of days.

    Things we most enjoyed:
    Boat trip (circle line siteseeing)
Top of the Rock (if you only go up 1 building do this one)

    Empire State building at night
We went up the Statue Of Liberty to the crown (needs to be booked a long time in advance, I wouldn't recommend it for someone who doesn't like heights)
    Walk along new york highline
    Walk over Brooklyn Bridge
    Walk through central Park
Broadway show (we saw matilda). If you haven't seen Book of Mormon in London then go see that!

    Other cool buildings/places to see:
    Ghostbusters Firehouse
    UN Building
    Flatiron Building
Grand central station (that was amazing)
    Chrysler building
    One World Trade Centre
Times Square (we didn't spend long here - too busy/hassled too much)

    Best food we had:
    Big Daddy's Diner
    Ellen's Stardust Diner
    Dallas BBQ
    Magnolia Bakery
    Eately

    Thanks a lot B33r, I appreciate it.
There's a lot to go at there - google here I come.

Going to book the SOL pedestial tour and the city pass, for the ESB, rock and circle line harbour trip.
Already on the case for the broadway tickets.

Not sure if the normal ESB tickets have it too but with the city pass one you can go up the ESB twice in the same day, once during the day (earlier the better to avoid the queues) and then again at night (which was breathtaking!).

When does the tickets go on sale for the beginning of October, at the moment it only goes up to September and I really want to go to the crown.

    Many thanks

    Thanks B33r.
Gutted all the May SOL crown availability has gone.

Keep an eye on the statuecruises website as they do get cancellations, there is a ticket available for the 26th may at present, unfortunately they do seem to appear as single tickets so might not be any good but worth a look.

Either keep looking or maybe ask them on facebook or twitter or live chat from their website. You'll be fine as long as you keep checking and book as soon as they become available, no need to be up at midnight on the day they do become live but the sooner the better.

    Evening folks

After advice please re our forthcoming NY trip.

I booked it a few months ago as a belated honeymoon, will be our first ever time away without the kids !

We arrive about 7pm local time on 20th April and come home on 8.40pm flight on 25th.

I've pretty much written off first night there, maybe a couple of beers on the roof terrace overlooking ESB at our hotel (Metro).

I started to get into the grove and booked TOTR for sunset on 21st but then my mum got ill and we lost her a little while ago. As a result I have nothing else booked !

Looking for recommendations as we want to chill out and relax, we both need a break. Idea's so far are walking Brooklyn bridge, Twin towers memorial site. Statten Island ferry past SOL. Any recommendations that will may suit late bookings/no bookings recommended please......

Finally I'm rubbish on London Underground so worried about getting from JFK to our hotel, is it simple or should I just grab a cab ?

    Thanks in advance

The jet lag will wake you early, never fear.

Long list available. The Intrepid is interesting.

The yellow hop on hop off river taxi is a good way to spend a day mixed with shorter stops around Manhatten and a guide on board.

Lots of free stuff visible by walking. Plan routes on Google maps to maximise time.

Cab. Allow $75 for fare, tolls and tip. Each way. If you're landing at Newark public transport may be easier but you will be tired.
