Hi, I started to read the old thread. thanks for all this information!

Im travelling in August for a week to NY and am staying in a hotel around the corner from times Square. The old thread had a post which said that staying in this location wasn't the best......

what's the general opinion on staying in this location as I still have time to change hotels...its the Hotel Edison...looks like a gorgeous art deco place....its expensive but then its a trip of a lifetime for me after a very bad year.

It really is a question of personal preference, the usual reasons people don't like this location is that it is extremely busy/congested and that hotels are much more expensive/over priced.
Sometimes, hotels that describe themselves as 'Times Square' aren't actually that close, but by calling themselves the 'Whatever Hotel Times Square' they can charge a few more $$ per room.

But if you've found somewhere you love that's in your budget and don't mind such a busy location, go for it!

I would have little problem in staying in such a place, almost all of the negatives (noise, light) can be easily negated so long as the hotel is good enough. In terms of location it's near as it gets to being perfect as it's central enough that you're pretty much on all the major subway routes.

A quick look at trip advisor tells me the hotel is likely a decent one - vast majority of the reviews are excellent or good with less than 600 saying it was a poor experience. Pretty sure I've been past it a few times as well, it's not so close as to provide a major headache, if you're a light sleeper take ear plugs & an eye mask.

For me, I wouldn't change hotel.

It's in the main tourist area, so those that know the city well tend to dislike that area and prefer to stay in locations with more of a local vibe like the Village or UWS.

The main reason being the majority of restaurants and bars in the area are chains, or over priced. In truth there's nothing wrong with the location.

On the plus side you can easily travel anywhere in the city from there, as there are plenty of Subway links. It's very handy if you plan to take in a Broadway show. If you want better bar and dining options you can take a 10 minute subway ride and be in the Village/Lower East Side. There are a few decent places to drink and eat in that area if you research before you go.

Also many forget that for first time visitors Times Square and midtown is something they will want to experience. True, hanging around Times Square isn't living like a local, but then you're not a local. I think for a first time visitor midtown is a good location, as you explore the city you can then identify areas that you'd maybe prefer to visit the next time.

And be warned the chances are you'll be planning next time on your flight home.

Wholy agree with the whole WTC memorial & selfies statement, nothing wrong with taking pictures (as I did) but not every little thing needs to be selfied

Just as bad as this for me were the people taking pictures in the memorial and museum. People's remains are interred there and the exhibits are a harrowing reminder of what happened that day, it just seemed wrong to me to be taking photographs of that.

We hardly took any pictures outside either, mainly because there was blizzard like snow and it was -10° (we went at the beginning of March this year) but also out of respect.
  • Hotel Edison is fine, we stayed there in May and are returning in September. Check out "Dannys Deli" next door to the hotel for breakfast. plenty of room to sit upstairs and cheap.

TS is busy, but has plenty of choice for the subway to escape. Ideal for the theartres. O'Lunneys Irish bar is a decent watering hole and does great food. If you visit make yourself known to the owner Huw or his daughter Maureen and tell them David from Wales sent you.

The Skylark bar is worth a visit for a cocktail / beer and a very good view of the Empire State.

Don't forget to enjoy yourself and wear comfortable shoes, because you'll end up walking miles !!!

Enjoy planning your return ...... Ha Ha Ha ! September will be our 20th visit !

I don't have issue with taking pictures of the memorial as such as to me it's not uncommon to photograph memorials - it's something I've done before. (Including pictures of the memorial plaque to 9/11 at Yankee Stadium) The whole selfie thing though is different that's just needless - no need to have a photo of yourself at that moment as it should be all about the people who died that day.

Totally agree with David from Wales - I'm just getting over the blisters a month later! (Not to mention a bruise under a toenail from falling up the stairs at a subway station which I was sure at the time was a broken toe!)

    Hey Y'all! :D

Hoping some folks can help me out! I know it's likely on this forum, but, erm, I'm sneaking on in work! :o

Can anyone advise the cheapest place to buy legit Broadway tickets? Specifically Wicked! I went on two websites and the prices varied quite a bit! One was https://www.broadway.com - is this the actual broadway theatre tickets? As I think they were more expensive which is unusual when you go direct?

I don't want to the do the last minute deals things as I've been before and we didn't end up getting the show we wanted :( so I am really keen to just book the tickets now and then I know we are sorted and can make dinner plans etc! :T

    Many thanks in advance! :D

    Good morning fellow night worker!

Have you tried broadwaybox.com Or stubhub?

The issue is wicked is still very popular therefore getting cheaper tickets tends to be somewhat difficult.

Broadwaybox.com will be the best site to see if there are any discounts for that show. Although some of the more popular shows never have discounted tickets.

If you click on the buy ticket link from BroadwayBox it'll take you straight through to the official ticket site for that show.

Do not use Broadway.com. They add their own markup on top of the actual ticket price.
