Obviously you know your wife better than I do, and I don't know how old your children are, and maybe I'm a control freak, but ...

I'm really not sure I'd appreciate being whisked away without knowing. Does she not even know you're going away?

You see, when the boys were home, there was always a multitude of things in my head which needed doing, which were only in my head. And if I hadn't been allowed to write my list down I'd have spent the whole time panicking that some of them wouldn't get done. I know some of them don't matter, but others actually do ...

    2) Show suggestions? We saw Chicago in London and loved it so I figure theres no point? Jersey Boys rates very highly....

On my recent trip, I saw Newsies which was fantastic.

Also a bargain, as we got tickets via the lottery.
You go along two and a half hours before the performance, and to enter the lottery you simply put your names in a hat then winners are drawn two hours before each performance. If you win you may then purchase up to two $30.00, cash-only tickets to that day's performance. The day I did it (midweek matinee), everyone in the line got seats in the stalls. It is probably busier at weekends though. You have to invest a bit of time going to the theatre beforehand, but not much & there's just time for coffee between entering & the draw! Remember to take ID though (passport) & cash.

These lotteries are are great way to get cheap tickets, useful website about them here

Another good MSE tip (probably already been mentioned, I haven't read this whole thread yet) is to ride on the Staten Island Ferry, which is free and goes right past the Statue of Liberty.
Also, the East River Ferry is a brilliant ride for only 4 dollars, we went from Pier 11 to East 34th St (Midtown), wonderful views of Manhattan & Brooklyn.

    4) This may seem daft, but I love big cooked breakfasts like sausages, bacon egg etc. Googling diners looks like its pancakes and omlettes, am I wrong?
If you're in the area, I'd recommend the Tick Tock Diner for breakfast (and if you're not in the area it's worth the trip) My husband recommends the Irish Breakfast as the nearest thing to a 'Full English'

Irish Bacon is back bacon, not cooked to a complete crisp.

  • Great thread, very useful information here :-)

I'm off to NY with my friend, Girly trip for our birthdays, we fly Nov 13- 19, Were staying at the New York Palace (midtown)...which looks great after its refurb and am very excited.

I'm after some advice on great places nearby to Eat and go to from the hotel.

We also need a shuttle/ taxi/ town car to get us from the airport to the hotel, any recommendations, I've seen a few on the net but would rather go to one someone recommended.

    Thanks in Advance :-)

    More advise please guys.

Going to New York end of Nov, leaving Heathrow Terminal 3 via American Airlines, coming back using BA and arriving at terminal 5.

I would like to stay in a hotel the night before I travel near the airport and use the parking facilities for the duration I am away.

Any advice, using the MSE parking price checker I can get some good deals but it's getting back to terminal 3 after I arrive back at terminal 5 (a taxi is estimated at @£25-£30.).

Any ideas, I hope I'm making sense

Not sure if you're sorted yet, but we've just booked Travelodge Heathrow (refurbished) at £29 per room and then Purple Parking for 6 days at £31.12 (four of us). Advantage is they'll pick up and drop off at whichever terminal you want.

Why nearby? It is a serious question. The area of the Palace isn't the best for dining, or anything other than the hotel itself. You have the subway at your doorstep, you can travel the whole of NYC easily and get to places that do great awesome amazing food.

As I've already said today. without cuisine ideas, it's hard to recommend, for food, look at ny.eater.com .

As is repeated every time to get from JFK to the hotel, the quickest way is probably public transport (airtrain / subway), and as described just a few posts ago, a taxi will set you back around $70 including toll and tip.

Car Service, check Carmel or Dial 7, both are around the same cost.

  • I meant nearby as being two single girls in NY, somewhere easier to get to/safe to travel to, I don't mind somewhere on the subway just not a long long way to travel home at night.

Were looking for normal kind of dining steak/seafood/chicken etc , love a nice steak nothing too posh although could do Chinese or Italian or similar, somewhere we can have a few drinks or cocktails to, our usual sort of places here are mainly chains TGIS Jamie Italian, Beefeater, although we do frequent a lovely local French and steak place sometimes, and enjoy trying little independents, some breakfast suggestions would be good too.

I think although after maybe getting our bearings well be happy to try public transport on the return journey to the station id like something easier more direct for drop off, my last memory of new York is as a teenager, and although we travel often to the states haven't been to NY other than stopovers.

Ive emailed carmel as I couldn't seem to find my hotel on there list, as a ballpark how much would this be?
