No. A certificate of occupancy in NYC proves what is allowed in that building. There is no comparison to airbnb here.
An illegal hotel is based on facts. Regardless what the proprietors say, they will want to portray being genuine.
No proper hotel needs a security deposit. What would happen when the city close them down? Do they have proper fire protection as they are running a hotel.
They are not a hotel. You're foolish (IMO) to keep your booking.
Thanks for your opinion M4RKM.GC Challenge 2018:

Holiday Inn LIC £958 free canx
Comfort Inn LIC £804 free canx
Sleep In LIC £663 free canx
Z hotel LIC £1290
Country Inn & Suites £986 free canx
Holiday Inn Manhattan View is 2 blocks from the Subway.
Country Inn & Suites is cheap, and often recommended. Also 2 blocks from the Subway.
Verve is sometimes also recommended.
Not really heard much about the Comfort Inn or the Sleep Inn.
Z hotel is poor in location in comparison to the rest, and more expensive than staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Manhattan, which has great links throughout Manhattan and into Brooklyn too.BROOKLYN
Holiday Inn Brooklyn £1036
Best Western Plus Prospect Park £722 free canx
Have you looked at the Hotel Le Jolie. If you're thinking of staying in Brooklyn, Williamsburg is a great location, much better than downtown IMO, as you'll hit Manhattan at 14th Street, rather than Financial District, so quicker to get around.
Other hotels in the same area are Wythe Hotel and King & Grove Williamsburg.
If I had to pick, the Holiday Inn would be OK, the Best Western Plus is too far out and not really near Prospect Park.MANHATTAN
Would choose to stay here if money no object but a 20 min ride into doesn't bother me. Can't find much in our price range which isn't surprising but here we are:
Wyndham Garden China Town £1253
Tribeca Blue £1143 free canx
Comfort inn Manhattan Bridge £1119 free canx
DAys Hotel Broadway £1135
Cosmopolitan Hotel Tribeca £1151 (also gives option of standard or loft room?)
I love love love the Cosmopolitan. not many other options that I'd go for out of these though. Have you looked at the King & Grove Manhattan, sometimes they have a decent price.0 -
I'm planning on taking my wife to New York for the first time next July as a surprise to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. I've beeked the Crowne Plaze Times Suare for 4 nights 16th - 20th July for $1256 via booking.com (free cancellation) - more pricey than most, but as it's our first (and maybe only) time in the Big Apple I want to make sure we're staying somewhere nice and central with good reviews.
Our dates are fairly fixed due to childcare arrangements (my parents can have the little one for those dates).
I've seen direct flights from Manchester, Birmingham & London in the region of £846 return PP - am I better off booking them or waiting for them to come down in price? Not really sure what constitutes a good price for them. As we're only going for a few days i'd really prefer direct flights.
Would I be better waiting for a package from the likes of BA (same dates & hotel with BA would currently be £2462 total against approx £2498 booking seperatly.
Thanks.In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0 -

Wow.. Ouch on both counts. Flights and Hotel.
It`s a little early to see good prices for hotels, but it is also in the school holidays so things will be more expensive. Weather could be really humid.
Personally, I would keep looking for flights and a better price for hotel.
Flights should be around £600ish at the most, paying £800 for a direct flight is crazy money, but if prices don`t change then maybe that is what the price is going to be for summer next year.

Thanks for your advice M4RKM, as a direct result of your response to my posts-I have found a stellar deal at an actual freaking hotel(I think)!
So here goes, 15 nights in a Superior Double in Hotel Newton (private bathroom and also third time lucky) for a grand total of £1515.17 inc taxes and fees = £101 per night also there is free cancellation, which I am ecstatic over! And...*drumrolls*.. 10% Quidco cashback!
You are right, regardless of whether it works out cheaper-it is not worth the risk of being homeless/kicked out during the hol and also preventing the sleepless nights I would have had from tonight onwards.
Although, I am half thinking that you might say this isn't a real hotel either?! :eek:GC Challenge 2018:

Looking on the BA website it does seem like they have some good options! I'll speak to hubby about it tomorrow as he is the one paying for the trip! An awesome Christmas/graduation present (I went back to uni to do a post grad course, I qualify in Dec).
He said he'd pay for it as a present so long as I found the trip. Lol. He hates looking for holidays and flights and stuff online.
Excellent. Congratulations in advance! Let me know what you go for! Re booking separately or together. It depends on the better price ( I sometimes book packages or separate - I use Ba sale/non sale as a benchmark usually) , Ba sale will be better price for sure as flights can be at least £500 return.0 -

Ah how lovely. I would say don't book anything yet - I paid £700 something for July flights 10 days before booking (that was last year with Virgin). Definitley look for a hotel and book something with a cancellable rate.
Price up options separate and package. Also if you are also looking for some luxury Ba tend to do business class sales which will be a great way to celebrate your special anniversary.0 -

We have a winner! It's legal, it's been a hotel for many years. No outstanding complaints and it's in a superb location!

Hi again. Have a look at the Ba sale. (I promise I have no shares lol)
Do you particularly want to stay in Times Square?0 -
