Ah great you had a fab time. Its a great city isn't it :D
It really is. When I got home, I felt genuinely gutted that I couldn't spend more time there, and this is from someone who gets homesick. When people say it's like London, I can see where they are coming from, but it seems to have that something more. It's almost unexplainable, just a feeling that you get. I can't stop gushing about it to be honest.

  • Just a quick question re. the t-mobile sim, can I pick one up while I'm in NYC? Tried to order online but they don't deliver internationally, there's a store right outside where we're staying which is convenient.

I know the feeling. I usually get post NYC blues for a good few weeks! Its such a great place!

    Enjoy planning your next trip!
  • Another question, sorry for bothering everyone haha!

I'm currently taking anti-depressants and will need them with me on our holiday. I know you're fine to take tablets with you in your carry-on as long as they are screened beforehand and you have your prescription, but my problem is that my passport is still in my maiden name therefore the prescription won't match up to my passport, does anyone know if I'll need to bring my marriage certificate with me as well to prove that the pills belong to me or will I get away with just telling them its my maiden name? Don't want to carry unncessary important documents with us all the way to America if I don't have to.

My wife and I are spending 8 nights in NYC in June, and have a budget of about £100 per night (£120 max) to spend on accommodation.

I appreciate that doesn't go very far in New York, but what's the best way to spend it? Something pathetically small in Manhattan, or something a bit more comfortable but further out?

(NB: happy to do self-catering/airbnb, but want somewhere private, i.e. not just a room in somebody's house)

Just to let you know that short apartment lets (under 30 days) are illegal in NYC (unless they are hosted). So a let is out of the question. Best guess should be try Long Island City, should be able to find something decent there around your budget.

Yeah, you won't be able to find something legal in Manhattan for that kind of price. AirBnB is only good for a private room in someone elses apartments (they live there while you're in the spare room), and you've said you don't want that. The vast majority of other apartment rentals you see will be illegal, but they're still advertised, as it is up to the person advertising to ensure they're not breaking the law, not the website (such as VRBO, AirBnB, TripAdvisor etc).

So, where can you stay? Have a look at County Inn & Suites in Long Island City (as already suggested). I would have searched for you but without dates I can't.
That is normally around $125 per night before taxes, so around £99 per night including taxes, and you get a continental breakfast.

It is only 1 stop away from Manhattan, and highly recommended.

    Hope that helps

Just got back from a week in NY, and want to say a huge thanks for all the help from this forum.
Transfer from JFK via airtrain/subway was v.easy and so was the return journey back to Newark via the train/airtrain - saved a packet! Also, I dont think it would have been much quicker via a taxi and we got to see lots of different places we wouldnt have seen otherwise (on way back Fantastic views of the manhatten skyline from the overground train)

Top of the Rock is fantastic, did ESB at night aswell (which we wanted to do) and it was lovely but our favourite was TOTR.

We loved the horse & carriage ride around Central Park cost $50 for 20-25mins.

A good couple of restarants we ate in which we loved were the Olive Garden (Times Sq) lovely meal, great staff, reasonably priced. Also, the Marriott hotel, Times Sq - we ate in the revolving restraunt $38 each for a buffet which was lovely - we had fab views as it revolved. Saw the sunset over Manhatten and then the lights start to come on well worth a visit. It is called the View, we didnt book but we went about 7pm, as 8pm came it started to get busy & queues were formed waiting for a table.

Did all the usual Ground Zero, Statten Island Ferry, Wall st, found the Law & Order steps, walked Brooklyn Bridge, did a sightseeing cruise etc etc.

Our hotel we chose from reviews was Salisbury Hotel, 123 W 57th St. It took 5-7mins to get to Times Sq walking leisurely, but had subway stops either end of the road so was great to access the various routes. Central Park was just around the corner. Hotel was nice, we had a huge room, 2 queen beds, mini kitchenette and right opposite & next door were food halls (one open 24hrs which had everything). I would highly recommend this hotel, reasonably priced, location great if you dont want to be in TS and was great to access everything.

Thanks once again for all your help etc, hope that the above feedback/recommedations helps someone, one day :)

I have just totally confused myself looking at data plans / SIM cards! :o I have an iPhone 4, hubby an iPhone 5. We were hoping to get one of them unlocked, and then a SIM card to use when we r out- but really only want it for google maps and other data.
    Has anyone got any advice?
