Thanks for the in depth response and very quick reply. We are flying from Manchester and the reason for going in August is Daughter will be 18 on the 6th plus she will be starting university in the September. You are correct the direct flights alone are coming in at the price of a complete break with Expedia. Thats of course if I am looking at the right sites. I agree about the kitchen thing but life is not good when Daughters not a hapy bunny :-) Joking aside I am happy and thankful for all ideas on this. I will take a look at the sites you suggest later as I have to go to work in a minute or so.

Kirsty (your daughter) turning 18 will be fun as she is now legal to have a drink . Oh except in America . Fun times . Enjoy NYC . I have found some travel agents pricing good deals for this summer in NYC . Worth going in and asking around . Get the feel of the prices . Be prepared to swich airports here and across pond for better deals and watch the times for flights as you can gain /lose a day just chasing a better few quid

    Hello all.
I was hoping someone may have some recommendations on hotels in New York. In the main area or there abouts. We are planning to travel on the 8th August and leave on the 12th 2013. 3 adults (Daughter will have just turned 18 hence the trip)
My better half is keen on getting a room with 2 x beds and one with a kitchenette as Kirsty (Daughter) is faddy with food so maybe an advantage. I have been on Expedia numerous times as this seems to be the best place to book on price and ease of use but I seem to be going around in circles. Budget wise off what I have seen it looks like between £3k to £3.5k will sort it. I would rather stay some where recommended if poss. Trip advisor is good but very conflicting reviews on many places, I am just totally phased out with looking now.

    Hope someone can help.

    Hi!
    have you checked Ba.com?
I have priced up an example BA flights - £800 each
A one bedroom suite at the Affinia Dumont £900 (Kitchen 1 bedroom and a sofa bed)
    Total £3300

Those flights are with Ba. If you shop around you may get cheaper.

The hotel is from the Affinia website and a cancellable rate. There are cheaper prices for an advanced purchase (£787.00) non cancellable though.

I have stayed here and it was very nice, not as modern as some hotels I have stayed in, But I would go back as location is perfect for me and I definitley appreciated having the the fridge in the NYC heat!

Do some research so when you're at the airport, you can see how much Dixons Travel are. J&R (jr.com) and B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/) are often recommended. You could also look at Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/).

Once you've done your research, then compare to the UK prices, (online and offline).

Pick up any SIM then, really it is only with Data that it gets complex.

Is your iPhone unlocked? If so, get a t-mobile sim and go on the $3 a day plan. In NYC this should give you 3G speeds, and plenty of data. Calls back home will come out of your prepaid balance.

Yeah it is unlocked so thanks I will deffo look into that! The camera info is useful too because I wanted to replace my clunky DSLR with a slightly less bulky mirrorless compact system, looking at the Nikon J1 and its pretty much half the price to what it is over here, will shop around.

Your so kind for taking some time out of your evening to research this for me.
I will look further into this later. Didnt get chance to do anything last night.

    Thanks

My daughter stays at the salisbury hotel. It is excellent location and she has a room with two king size beds and a kitchenette. Clean and friendly staff right by central park, fifth avenue, ten min walk to times square and opposite russian tea rooms. She loves it there. Good price too.

Got back a couple of days ago, and all I can think about is when am I going to go again, possibly for a longer amount of time. Did all the touristy things, but now I want to start exploring a bit more.
