Looking at ways of saving money, I've been thinking about getting the GoSelect pass as I've mentioned before, but some of the attractions have periods in the week where entry is free (such as MoMa, Staten Island Ferry). Whould it be worth paying for it, if it meant there would be less people when visiting?
Another thing I wanted to add, is would it be possible to visit all 5 boroughs of NYC, as well as the landmarks in 5 days, or is it asking too much?Clint Eastwood Movie Icon book. First Win!:j0 -
Does anyone know if there is a good site for live webcams of New York? Only a few weeks from our visit and I'd like to get a feel of the weather and atmosphere:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Staten Island Ferry is ALWAYS free, it's a commuter ferry. MoMA is mobbed on a Friday, and I would personally avoid that.
As for all 5 boroughs, easy! Just have to plan well!! I can help with places to visit in the other boroughs if you need.0 -
Hi Guys.
I was thinking of getting a pre-paid travel card to put half my spending money on and take the other half in cash, probably pay for all my meals on the card and have the cash for drinks and bits here and there, would anyone recommend a FXcard or an equivalent?
Cheers, Will
Can't really help with your other questions cos I'm a first time visitor too but we've used a FairFX card for our previous two trips to America and found it to be really great, just like you we used the card for the big spends like food and entertainment then kept a bit of cash for the incidentals. It's just a lot easier and the chip & pin security gives us peace of mind.:heart2:0 -

To be honest, I haven't even started planning any sort of an itinerary, and we take off in 4 weeks. Things we are definitely looking to do are an Knicks game, which is on the Friday we get there, or the Sunday, as well as a Broadway show. Top of the Rock, Empire State, the Met, possibly the Guggenheim and the Brooklyn Bridge have been thought about, as well as Central Park which is obviously free. I might have missed a few things, but we haven't really set when we want to do those things. I wouldn't mind just walking around streets and just see what all the different areas are like, say compare the Village to Upper East Side.Clint Eastwood Movie Icon book. First Win!:j0 -
Yeah, I waas searching for free things to do and Staten Island ferry came up. How is it compared to the cruise-type ferrys you get? So, I would be better off getting tickets for MoMa and other types of similiar attractions?

Check out High Line if you get a chance, its an urban park built on a section of the former elevated NY railroad. What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...0 -
Hi,
This is our iteinerary - we go in 4 weeks.....any thoughts would be appreciated as never been before so not sure if we have planned too much in the daytime
Thurs - land 12.15 arrive hotel 3-4pm off to New York Yankees game (only game on whilst we are there)
Fri - TOTR, Rockfellar Centre, walk to Waldof Astoria and down park avenue to Chrysler Building and Grand Central. Virgils Real BBQ for dinner then onto Madison Sq Gardens for Knicks game. If we feel like it after up Empire State building
Sat - Central park, Guggenheim (2hrs) tram to Roosevault Island, Bit of shopping (Bloomingdales/FAO Schwartz) Times Square PM (meal and drink)
Sun - AM free (incase we havent done all of the above) then over to Brooklyn flea market walk back over the bridge to see city hall, (Also want to see steps from Law & Order not sure which they are?)
PM may go to the Nighthawk cinema if anything interesting on
Mon - World Trade Centre memorial, Walk past NY Stock Exchange, Federal Reserve Bank, Wall st and onto Stratten Island Ferry (see SoL). Back to China Town and Little Italy for the evening
Tue - Central Park Zoo and some more Central Park. Shopping at Old Navy/Sketchers/Macys etc
Wed - not sure yet, leave free incase we miss anything or want to go back. Fly home 9pm so leave about 5pm
What do you think? Have I put too much up front/missed anything interesting out? (would like to do the Highline, Dumbo, water taxi ride, Brooklyn Bridge at Night if we have time)
Thanks in advance for your thoughts0 -

If you've never been to a baseball game before I wouldn't rush there, they always start on time but it can be a looooooong evening, also regardless of age if you want a beer take i.d with you Mrs Pb was once refused a drink because she didn't have her i.d and I then saw a chap who must have been 60+ refused a drink because he had no i.d either.Fri - TOTR, Rockfellar Centre, walk to Waldof Astoria and down park avenue to Chrysler Building and Grand Central. mmmm virgil's!! be cautious of their starters tho as they are massive but perfect for sharing, I highly recommend the train wreck fries. Personally given you have been to TOTR I wouldn't bother with esb.Sat - Central park, Guggenheim (2hrs) tram to Roosevault Island, Bit of shopping (Bloomingdales/FAO Schwartz) Times Square PM (meal and drink)
Times square on a saturday is gonna be busy busy busy for food etc, you would have already visited it when you went to virgil's there are plenty of better places to get your eat on and your drink on.(Also want to see steps from Law & Order not sure which they are?)
http://www.iamnotastalker.com/2009/01/20/law-and-order/Mon - Back to China Town and Little Italy for the evening
little italy is tiny so dont figure on spending too much time there and china town is meh!! well apart from the chinatown ice cream factory which is amazingTue - Central Park Zoo and some more Central Park. Shopping at Old Navy/Sketchers/Macys etc
dont forget at macys, and bloomingdales, if you take you passport and pop to the customer service desk they will give you an out of towners 10% discount card
all in your plan isn't too bad I personally would try and get to SOHO or chelsea for food on saturday and avoid TS.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
thanks Phatbear, any recommendations in SOHO & Chelsea for food? We have a few evenings spare so will deffo visit these places....appreciate your comments and money saving at shops (didnt know about that)0
