    Hi Guys.

Glad I found this sub-forum. I'm off to NYC with the missus on the last week of this month for 5 days, very much looking forward to it as it's our 1st time in the states.

I'm flying from Belfast to Newark and would like some hints and tips to make the most of my trip and have a few questions that hopefully the helpful people on here could answer for me.

I've looked into booking the USAcoach which is recommended on the liberty airport website, it's 28 dollars each for a round trip from EWR to Penn station which is near our hotel (New Yorker). Is this my best option or are there other more cost effective ways in doing this? My thought is that at nearly £20 each for a 10 mile return is a bit steep isn't it, as I wouldn't pay that sort of money for a short return bus in the U.K

I was thinking of getting a pre-paid travel card to put half my spending money on and take the other half in cash, probably pay for all my meals on the card and have the cash for drinks and bits here and there, would anyone recommend a FXcard or an equivalent?

the New York Pass - is it currently on offer on their website at 150 dollars which is circa 100 quid each for a 3 day pass, this all looks good on paper as it seems to save quite abit of money, we will be doing as much sightseeing as possible in the short time we are there, would this be my best way of doing so?

Places to eat and drink would be great to hear of, I'm Irish and in the Forces so was also hoping to flash my I.D as I hear it gets you alot of discounts over there as they love the military and all that hoorah stuff. would the Irish bars be somewhere I would have a good time, surely their not the usual Irish bars as with over here?

it's all getting exciting, can not wait to go.

    Cheers, Will

AirTrain & NJ Transit for EWR to Penn Station

TBH, if you do a search you'll find the answers all your questions have been covered many times over :)

  • Hello Will ......... welcome to the NYC forum.

As JB has said "AirTrain & NJ Transit for EWR to Penn Station"

As for spends ......... we normally take around $500- $700 cash to get us by and take cash out as we need it from hole in the wall. Anything we buy from department stores we use our Post Office CC.

We buy a Metro card to get around ourselves (really easy) Have a bit of a plan as to what to do each day. Like Lower Man ....... SoL, Trade Centre, Wall St & Brooklyn bridge. Another day perhaps China town, Chealsea, SoHo, The Village. Midtown another day ESB, Time Square, Grand Central. Maybe a day in central park, 5th Avenue, ToTR. These are only guidelines you may want to visit the UN, Intrepid aircraft carrier ? Have a look at a map and group a few things together. But remember it's a holiday not a yomp !!!

Irish bars are many O'Lunneys TS is our watering hole, well at least for a nightcap or 2 or 3 or 4 etc !

I would flash you ID as much as you can to get discounts etc.

Hope this helps, come back if you want more !

I've tried searching the thread but can't find what I'm looking for.

Last year we went to New York in February and stayed about 100 yards from Times Square. I think it cost about £800 each for 5 nights.

We'd like to go back next year, possibly May or June as it'll be a bit warmer and wondered is this classified as "low season"?
I've had a look at the prices for this June and they're almost the same as what we paid for February.

Nobody else can really answer this for you - it depends on exactly what you want to visit and how the costs compare. Have a look round on the Internet, Trip Advisor, maybe get a couple of travel books (from the library if you want to be very MSE, or the second hand ones on Amazon can be picked up for a couple of quid) to work out what actually interests you, then look up the individual ticket costs - do they come to $150 or more? There's your answer.

For what it's worth, I'm not as opposed to these "passes" as some on here - we used something similar in LA and it worked out as the cheapest option - but for New York I personally wouldn't get the value out of one as much of what's included I have no real interest in visiting.
  • Hi folks wee bit of advice needed. I will be arriving in Newark airport 5/6 hrs earlier than my travel companion who is flying from Heathrow. She's never been to NYC before so i'd be prepared to wait on her to travel into Manhattan together. My question is what is there to do in or near Newark arrivals for some or all of this time??

what time do you get there? Could you go to your hotel and then go back to pick her up?
  • Hi, yes my flight arrives about 2 pm, but with the uncertainty of timings until the day as always i'd like a bit of an idea whats available to do if i have to stay in Newark.
