Most hotel websites don't allow you to choose and pay extra for a view room - anyone know of any websites that do?
Hi I have a feeling you may be better off with a package based on what I have seen.
The Affinia Group hotels do. Some hotels offer guaranteed skyview rooms, I know the Dumont does - I think the Sheraton may do too0 -
I do like breakfast myself but am happy to go out for it as that seems the done thing in NYC. When in Rome. Or New York. As long as I can get some coffee in me fairly quickly I'll be ok. From my (extensive!!!) searches I've seen variations from coffee making in the room, to nothing, to all day coffee in a communal area.0

New York has so many places you can have a real experience with just trying out difference places for breakfast.
Most hotel breakfasts included as part of the deal are normally a continental buffet breakfast and to be honest they are not really very good.0 -

Still hoping for any comments about the NYMA hotel and price.
Also come across this:
Wyndham Garden Chinatown on Hotels.com. Comes with what I wanted: free wifi, and breakfast (sorry!), and hopefully a nice view: can get it for 5 nights in May with a discount code for £777, or also with a balcony for £913. Again, looks decent according to tripadvisor.

quikbook.com - You see what room types they have. Sometimes you may have to go directly to the hotels website. Screenscraper sites like otel.com / hotels.com etc etc may only have access to some of the inventory within the hotel itself.
Nolitan - has an option called Cityscape Balcony Queen, however, it's out of your price range. It also doesn't have breakfast.
The convenience of 3 day old crossiants, and pastries, is pointless IMO, when you can get MUCH better breakfasts, probably right outside the hotel, or within a few block walk.
Also, may be worth checking out oyster.com to find photos of the rooms etc.
Finally, the NYMA while a nice looking hotel (i've not stayed there), around the corner from the ESB, but getting a view, you'll need a high floor, AND a street view just to get a glimpse of it between two buildings. Being further away may be better.
I'd suggest you get on to tripadvisor and read some reviews, I've already seen one on the wyndam garden which says the breakfast is so-so. The breakfast isn't free, it's included in the price. Choose a hotel with no breakfast and you could get a better hotel. Buy a coffee, and a bagel for $5 from the deli on the corner, seriously it's MUCH better quality.“Loved the hotel and its location, don't bother with breakfast” ... Instead go to the nearby Bagel Bakery (2 min walk, turn right from hotel) for $4-6 breakfast (hazelnut coffee to die for, hot bagels, pastries, fresh fruit etc) plus plenty of seats upstairs....

I take your points thanks. Are you able therefore to recommend any hotels that would be in my price range and would have the kind of views I'm after?
Also, do you have any idea how likely it'll be to get sub-£400 direct flights from London in May? Part of me would want to wait to see if that comes down, but not if it means missing out on a hotel (if/when I find one I'm completely happy with!)
Thanks for all the advice so far. :beer:0 -
A thought about hotel breakfasts: if you're having one, then you don't have to be 'ready to go' before breakfast: you head down, eat, head back up and faff round for half an hour or an hour before you're ready to go out (or is that just me and my family?)
Now, if you're having a lazy / relaxing time, that's probably a good way to start the day.
BUT in NYC, you're more likely to want to 'get up and get going', in which case, IMO, NOT having breakfast in the hotel is A Good Thing.
Now, DH will tell you that I do not willingly get out of bed without a cup of tea inside me, and the first day he did nobly venture out to try and get me one (I drink Redbush, not 'normal' tea). He failed to find any, so after that I gave up and just performed my ablutions, dressed, and harangued the boys until they were ready. Then we went to the diner next door to the hotel, and got enough breakfast inside us to last us until mid afternoon. But we were out, so we just kept going!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Hmmmmm, tempted by this now: £544 for 5 nights in May at Wolcott Hotel via RatesToGo. No breakfast included (I'll follow everyones advice!), and wifi is $10 extra per day. Mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, but again, there's a possible view of the ESB, so am seriously considering this.... Thoughts?
With the £400pp return flights I found, am I really going to get a better deal than this sub £1400 for the 2 of us for 5 nights in May, in what seems to be a good area in the heart of everything?? I suppose my previous question of whether or not I should wait for the flights to go down still applies, but there's only 2 rooms left at this £544 rate, so I'm guessing they'll go long before flight prices drop...
Thoughts please anyone?
EDIT: oh no! This morning it has gone up to £658!
EDIT 2: just searched again, and it is still £544 - not sure what happened there. Should I go for it?!0 -
hermann2811, have you looked at Long Island City? More common to find a breakfast there and a short subway hope to Manhattan.
I know what you mean about breakfast in a hotel. We would generally prefer it as it saves the effort of looking if you can't be bothered. And if you fancy a change you don't have to have the hotel breakfast.0 -
