Just remember though, that if you go over your single person allowance (about £350 I think), you'll need to declare it at customs and pay import duty on the total value of the item.Legal team on standby0

Most things are exempt from Duty, but the 20% VAT on the value of the item is the killer. And it's not just on the value over £390.
Anyway, Happy Christmas!0 -

Sorry, but I'm not sure that information is incorrect - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htmLegal team on standby0 -

It's all down to commodity codes, and digital cameras, tablets, and laptops are exempt - link here
In all instances Customs Duty is waived if the amount of the duty payable is less than £9.
If a digital camera of £400 is brought into the UK, the Duty is £0 as it is exempt, and the VAT is still payable on the WHOLE £400, so therefore £80, not on the £10 over the customs allowance.0 -
From your own link, doing a dummy calculation :-Camera Lens has an import duty rate of 6.7% and VAT rate of 20%Legal team on standby0

Merry Christmas everyone! :j
Did the big reveal today, my heart was pounding when I gave them their wrapped up guidebooks. My daughter actually twigged it first and then went into complete shock and became mute for the best part of two hours, the other half said he was shaking and couldn't believe it - so a good result all round!
Lots of planning to do, thank you all for your help so far

If you need anymore help you know where to ask. Another good forum is on Frommers.com ....... You have New York locals on there to ask.

Happy Boxing Day everybody. I'm thinking of going to New York with my 19 year old son sometime during june/july. Have no idea where to begin looking for somewhere to stay or who to book with. Went about 5 years ago and stayed in the Mariott Brooklyn Bridge but would like somewhere more central. Booked with Thomas Cook last time but know they have had some financial problems recently so any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks.0
