Thanks pb, I had already bookmarked Virgils but will have a look at Dallas too. Between us we could eat anything - Italian, bbq etc so shouldn't be short of places to eat. I dont want to plan too much in advance so its going to be hard to know where we will be eating but ill definitely jot down a few names and addresses.

Had been looking at some sort of harbour cruise as I thought it would be a nice way for little one to see the skyline and not do miles of walking or in/out of subway stations and came across the circle cruise but also found the water taxi, the water taxi seems like a good way to have some flexibility with stops, any first hand experiences?

One other question (sorry!) has anyone done intrepid? I see they have Concorde there and other half has always wanted to see one close up. Is it worth a few hours, maybe before the cruise/water taxi? I see the piers are relatively close together.

Thank you all so much. I'm a regular on the TA Maldives forum...not even a mass transit system there lol, just slightly different holiday styles!

Ive used the water taxi once to get to a yankees game and it was ok.

One of the main issues of "site seeing" in ny is the scale of the place so if you wanna see stuff you either have to get up high, like top of the rock, or stand well back. The water taxi tends to hug the shore so you only get brief snap shots of the main sites

Noted. I will most definitely be doing TOTR anyway, that's one of my top 5!

If it was just me and the other half I would just play it all by ear and be up for walking miles and miles and miles but with madame I don't want to over do it and ruin her trip. She has never been long haul before mand I think it will knock her out a bit. I want to allow plenty of time/rest periods/sit downs for her, if she is getting on with it fine then we can always do more but I would rather plan to do less if that makes sense.

I really do appreciate the pointers. :)

Staying in Times Square OMG ................ After 14 trips to NYC we have always stayed in TS ! Good selection of subway stations to get you almost anywhere. But you will get fed up of being approached to either go on the open top tours or go see a comedy show !

We are going to the Crowne Plaza in January can't wait and will report back to you what it was like. For the little one you have Hersheys and M&M stores on your dooerstep. For the older one Intrepid is very good, been there twice, very interesting.

    We enjoy http://www.virgilsbbq.com/ and http://www.johnspizzerianyc.com/

You could also try http://www.olunneys.com/ which is another option for eats and drinks around TS.

When we have taken people to NYC for the first time, we always head straight to the TOTR first. From there you get a great view and scale of what you have to explore !!!

    Hope this helps

Thanks very much David, Virgils seems to be cropping up a lot so I can almost guarantee we will make a stop there! My daughter will love m&m world as she went mad about the one in London when she visited.

Ive almost let slip so many times today, only have another day to get through!

Will look forward to your feedback on the CP, it was actually one of the cheapest options we had due to wanting two double beds.

Am really looking forward to central park, will the ice skating be open mid Feb still? Will have to do some digging on the central park website.

Would love to see the lion king while there but that might be pushing the boat out a bit!!

There used to be decent camera shop up by Columbus circle , but I use either B&H (beards and Hats) or J&R both are top drawer !

There are plenty of horror stories about the camera shops around the TS area. I am not going to comment as I have never used them.

We wanted a decent camera and lens and thought it would be good to get one while we were over there . We seen a decent Nikon D3100 & top range lens priced at just over $400(£260 at the time-about half price for uk) as we was umming and arring it went down to $290 then $240 then $195 without me even haggling . Told the seller i have "just MOVED to NYC and can i return it if there are any problems" Assured i could i bought it and never had a problem in 3 years. Shop around we got it from somewhere up 8th ave by the hampton inn at the time a small shop seller
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
