Holiday Inn NEW YORK CITY-MIDTOWN-57TH ST., NEW YORK CITY, 14 Feb - 17 Feb 2013, 2 DOUBLE BEDS NONSMOKING - with Room only

The Milford Plaza Times Square, NEW YORK, 02 Feb - 05 Feb 2013, DOUBLE 2 DOUBLE BEDS-SUPERIOR - with Room only

The Holiday Inn is the better of the two hotels IMO, (the Mildford, is known as the mildew plaza, as some of the rooms are not so desirable, and so worn out!). I just can't recommend the Milford at all, (nor the Carter, or the Penn hotels)

    Hi everyone,
We booked a holiday to New York but unfortunately de to family problems, we can't go! :(
We also have a hotel in Mont Tremblant too.
We were supposed to be going 13-17th Jan at Ink48 hotel on Times Square. Hudson River view suite. One queen sized bed. Free drinks reception every evening. It's so upsetting not to be going but we can't even get a refund (booked it on Expedia).
Any ideas what to do with it. Especially seeing as the flights are wasted!

Hi, no unfortunately it doesn't cover it if its a condition that they had before we got the insurance :(
Ok, I'll remove the bit about selling it. Thanks for letting me know :)

Sorry to hear that, You may have tried already.. have you have tried changing the dates to go later in the year if possible?
  • thanks for all the suggestions, i am looking at them all now.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

You can only upgrade the more expensive economy tickets to prem, which means its usually cheaper to buy prem outright (which you note in your calculations).

Conversely ALL prem econ tickets can be upgraded to business - even cheap sale ones.

General rule is using Avios to get business or first tickets makes sense, whereas economy or prem it does not. (Unless you are buying at short notice).

South Africa is a tricky route to find Avios seats, so you'll need to be organised. You may need to book prem econ seats then wait for upgrades to be available, which they often do towards your date if travel.

Thanks again for the advice. Having looked at dates in November/December there's already little/no availability for using Avios + cash to go Business to NY so think I'll stick with the recommendation of Delta economy comfort for this one and wait for the South Africa trip.

I appreciate Savvy_Sue's point re: Avios may not be around in 3 years time but seeing as there's no availabilty showing for upgrade to business to NY other than on very limited dates I'll chance it or use on another trip if it looks like it's going to disappear.
  • Hi folks, I've got 12 hour layover in JFK and want to go into the city. I know I can get the airtrain to Jamaica Station, but I'm not sure how to proceed from there, can anyone please help?

I'm landing approx 8.10PM and have to clear customs and re-check my bags for my next flight in the morning.

JFK is IN the city.. problem solved. ;)

As it is an overnight flight, what are your plans for somewhere to sleep?

OK. Once you're at Jamaica on the AirTrain, just hop on the subway or LIRR into Manhattan. LIRR is more expensive but quicker, and will drop you off in Midtown at Penn Station.
