    Hi All,

Just a very quick one - am hoping to book our Feb trip next week.

This is my 12 yo daughters xmas pressie and it's all a surprise, I wanted to give her the booking confirmation inside a guide book, does anyone have any recommendations for an easy to use book for someone her age?

I thought it would be great for her to do some planning of things to visit etc :)

    Hi There!

There are many websites that you can pre book tours and shows on etc. If theres a particular Broadway show that you would like to see then its definitely better to book it in advance, we made the mistake of leaving it until we got there and really struggled to get tickets! I would definitely recommend going up the Empire state building and Rockefeller centre up to the observatory at the top, stunning views!

There are also many museums and attractions that are free to get into (some ask for a token donation but are well worth a look!) Central park is a must, so beautiful whatever time of year you go! A boat ride is also fantastic, i think it only cost us $15 dollars each and went right around the statue of Liberty. Personally i thought the helicopter ride that we went on was very expensive for what it was and wouldnt go on it again! There are so many free things you can do in NYC, you really dont have to spend a fortune to have a good time!

In terms of your accommodation i have to agree with what others have been saying - we made the mistake of staying in New Jersey because it was cheaper than Manhattan! The last couple of times we have stayed at The Salisbury Hotel and i cannot recommend this hotel highly enough, very reasonable prices and 5 minute walk from Times Square!

    Have a great time!

I will second the Salisbury. My daughter always stays there and we have stayed there a couple of times. Excellent location and pretty goodbotel.

We did this once with our daughter and hid the ticket inside a Moleskine NY diary/planner. She used it to plan where she wanted to go. It had maps and street indexes with it along with subway maps etc and was brilliant. You can get them off amazon, it is reduced to £9.06 at the moment. Highly recommend it

Does anyone know of any shows that are exclusive to NY, if there is such a thing? As in, you can't catch them anywhere else, as I would like to watch something that's not possible elsewhere. Also, how hard would it be to get Knicks tickets, what would the cost be and would it be worth going to watch a game?

Dorling Kindersley also do a nice small one, but there are lots about, I'd go and browse in Smiths or somewhere, they may even have an offer of buy one get one half price, because I think it's useful to have a guidebook each ...

Thanks Gregg & Sue. It's also a surprise for my other half so it would make sense to get them both one so they can open them at the same time! I really can't wait to see their faces, I have no idea how I have managed to stay quiet :rotfl:

Just wanted to bump this for any responses, and I also wanted to ask, would it be worth going to areas outside of central Manhattan, such as Brooklyn, the Bronx, Harlem, Coney Island? Is there much to do in these places?

Brooklyn is 8 x the size of Manhattan

Harlem is a neighbourhood of Manhattan

Coney Island is a neighbourhood of Brooklyn.

Yes, it's worth visiting, but depends what you want, and what you want to do.

As for the Knicks.. they're an awful team, so it's easy enough to get tickets. Check on ticketmaster, or you could try the Brooklyn Nets, and kill 2 birds with one stone, visit Brooklyn, and something different..

  • What would you say is best regarding money? Is it better to carry dollars or would it be better to get a card we can use over there?

The Knicks are doing ok this season actually but yes I agree with trying the Brooklyn Nets. I went to New Jersey during my last NY trip to watch the Nets and it was brilliant. Their home stadium is the new Barclays Center now and looks worthy of a visit.
