Just thought I'd let you all know my plans.

It's will be nearly 18 months since I've last been in NYC, as it was September 2011 I was there last. I remember the conversation I had with my family saying that I'm happy and I've "DONE" NYC. I have in a way, ticked off most of the tourist attractions off my bucket list.

I would have gone back in March 2012, but I moved from Yorkshire to London, and my normal September trip for NYC Beer Week didn't happen because there was no Beer Week in 2012.

So, what am I doing this time, well, I am currently planning a shorter trip than normal, mainly because I'm going for Beer Week, and I'll just see what else I can do in the time. I'm not there for shopping, and I've probably got Intrepid I want to head over and do, along with a quick trip to MoMA.

Leaving the UK on the 27th Feb, 4 Nights in NYC, before heading West, and 4 nights in Denver, then heading home (via 4 hour layover in JFK) on the 7th March.

So, Denver, not somewhere I've been before, and not somewhere that is often talked about. But, it is famed for its craft beer, and if I'm doing a beery holiday, I might as well go to the beer capital of the USA!

Staying at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for the 4 nights in NYC, and will by flying Delta (as usual), into JFK, and just planning what hotel to stay in Denver.

    BOOM! That's Trip 17 sorted! :D

  • Morning all :)

Just a quick question, anyone have any ideas regarding transport from JFK to our hotel in manhatten? From what I remember, last time we got a shuttle bus that was so massively unhelpful it was unbelievable. It just travelled through New York with no mention oh stops or where it was stopping. Previously we got a cab, but I know that cabs hate going from JFK to manhatten and vice versa as it isnt good money for them.

Any ideas apart from the Airtrain ?

Ah last time I went, it was hard to flag a cab and when we eventually did, the cabbie said they dont like going to JFK especially as its a flat fare and they hardly make a profit? :o

I shall look at that post from m4rk, everytime Ive been, its been a tad hectic getting out of JFK! Wish me luck, as its first time without parents... eek!

The flat fare has recently being increased, and if there was no money, why are there always queues of cabs.

There are no issues with the Airtrain / LIRR or Subway combo, but it depends where you're going which is the best option.

Carmel or Dial 7 if you wish to book a car service. You just call them once you've got your bag, and they'll pick you up.

How strange! I've been twice before and struggled to get a cab! We couldnt see one in sight, mere coincidence I presume. I think I might go with Carmel/ Dial 7. Is it best to book in advance (we're going in march) or when we get there? Also, is there any vouchers for a discount?

Also, does anyone have an idea on how to present it as a gift? Since its my girlfriends 18th birthday in March I really want to suprise her!

Struggled? There is an official line at every terminal with a dispatcher, you should be doing nothing apart from joining this line and telling the dispatcher where to go

As for Carmel and discounts, go to the first page of this thread, click through to getting into Manhattan, and then read my post there.

Hi Just got back from New York. Brilliant time.
Thanks to advice from this thread got the Air Train and LIRR to Penn Station (Our hotel was nearby) and booked a Dial 7 car for return to JFK. No problem with either - very easy and good value. hth
  • Hey I need some help in understanding the transport system. I need to get to my hotel in new jersey (fairfield inn east rutherford) from jfk airport. From what I understand I can get the airtrain into manhattan and then I can pick up the bus to new jersey from port authority. I'm a little stuck on how the airtrain works, Do I buy a ticket to board it at the airport? Do I go to Howard beach or jamaica?

My head is exploding from all the info.

    Any tips please

You don't buy a ticket for the AirTrain until you get off. So if you got off at Jamaica you buy your ticket there. Not sure about the rest of your question sorry
