    Hi All,

I am very secretively planning a 4 or 5 night break to NYC mid Feb as a surprise xmas present for my fiance and my 12 year old daughter and neither of them have a clue - which is great! Still very much in the planning stages as am not in a position to be able to book until later next month or mid December.

I(We) want to do most of the 'major' tourist bits - TOTR, SoL, TSq, Grand Central etc but I also know there are a lot of things we are likely to miss being first time visitors and I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to let me know the one thing they would recommend that perhaps isn't so well known. Or maybe an area to visit that most wouldn't know about? Am trying to make the actual activities as cheap as possible so lots of things to see would be great!

    Thanks

    Jody

Lots of film/tv locations to check out if you or they are film tv buffs, I went to the cupcake shop from sex & the city and carrie bradshaws front door is round the corner. Also went to FAO Schwartz where they have the big piano from 'big' which you can actually have a go on :)

Many people would. I however wouldn't because the location isn't great. It's a large hotel with over 900 rooms in it, there isn't much in the way of good dining or bars etc around it. However, it's been renovated, and it does get good reviews on TA. I am laughing at the "sketchy area" review, it's crowded with tourists so it is sketchy? Bizarre!!! .

Hi - we spent a whole day in Brooklyn, wandering around Prospect Park and Park Slope area. We then walked along to DUMBO and finished the day by walking over Brooklyn Bridge just after sunset. This was my favourite day as Brooklyn has a different "feel" to Manhattan and so many places to eat and drink.

Any ideas what to do in NY in a hurricane?! Thankfully we're safely holed up in our hotel in Brooklyn. Did go for a walk over Williamsburg Bridge and back on Brooklyn Bridge earlier today. Only yellow cabs and police cars on the streets - strange to see Manhattan so empty.

When you say that the location isn't good, do you mean it would be full of tourists, so would be quite hectic or that it's not close to anything, because it seems it's not far from Times Square? There is a price of £210 per night for a standard double, what do you think? I don't really mind about bars because I don't drink, and I'm sure we would find somewhere to eat. :)

All I can say is make sure you stay in the "safe" areas and hope you ride it out. This might sound strange, but I would like to experience something like that, an empty Manhattan, just for its eerieness.

Stay in your hotel, visit the local businesses if it is safe and support them. You don't say where in Brooklyn you are, but if you're in Williamsburg, I can give you a long list of places to visit, I Know the area well.

Most importantly, stay safe. Watch TV!
