    Hi again,
I wonder if anyone would have any suggestions for me and my two boys (9 and 11 yo) for today?

So far out of 4 days here, we've spent most in the hotel, as you can probably appreciate. I've been checking websites as much as I can, but can't find anything open: libraries, art galleries, all public parks, Intrepid, village Halloween parade, subways, our tix to see Stomp last night: all off the menu or cancelled :-(

Hotel is on w29th street. Looks like pretty much everything from four blocks south and down is out because of power failures.

Can't seem to find out if shops will be reopening today: all the big ones were shut yesterday. Frankly, we don't like shopping but it would help time pass.

Buses are running, so will be able to get around. Any suggestions welcome.

    Jana

Thanks for all of this Mark - we're flying out next Wednesday & hoping things will be close enough to back to normal by then that we get to do more or less everything we wanted!

libraries, art galleries, all public parks, Intrepid, village Halloween parade, subways,

OK, It is still early in NYC, so a lot of the websites have not updated yet. However, I've found out the following.

The Museum of Modern Art is Open as Normal.

Metropolitan Museum of Art - Open Noon - 5:30pm - FREE!!!!!

American Museum of Natural History -Open 1st Nov
Top of the Rock - Open 1st Nov
    Empire State Building - Open from 8:30am - 2:00am
Times Square - Open as always.
    Madame Tussauds - Open!
Bronx Zoo - Opens Saturday 3rd.

The best thing I can do is recommend you WALK, or hop on one of the buses going somewhere and just explore. I recommend doing that normally, but no one listens ;)

Bear in mind that a lot of downtown Manhattan is without power, so keep walking up towards Times Square. No Parks are open, but there are still things to see in NYC with things closed.

The following buses are running right now and are free, however, very crowded. I'd recommend that you leave these buses to the locals, and use your feet!

    Manhattan
    M2, M5, M8, M11, M14, M15, SBS15, M34, M34A, M22, M57, M60, M86, M96, M101

    Brooklyn
    B1, B3, B15, B35, B41, B44, B46, B61, B82, Q58, Q59

    Queens
    Q4, Q6, Q7, Q10, Q12, Q22, Q23, Q25, Q33, Q46, Q50, Q60, Q65, Q66, Q69, Q101, Q113

Hop On Hop Off - Greyline & Citysights- Resumes 1st Nov
East River Ferry Service - Resumes 1st Nov
    Subway - See Next Post
    LIRR - Limited Service
    Bridges - Open

It might be some time for this subway station reopens - http://gothamist.com/2012/10/30/video_inside_a_completely_flooded_s.php - look closely at the stairs going down to the platform....

    Thanks Mark,

We ended up walking miles, and using the buses too. Very crowded but to be expected. Lots of the shops were open today after all. Some for limited hours but some still open now.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was one of the main things on my list anyway, so we were delighted to be able to spend a few hours there for nowt.

Went to Macy's too: can't work out what the big deal is. It reminds me of Debenhams on a good day. Meh.

Tick Tock for breakfast and John's Pizzeria for dinner. Oh gawd my stomach.

Looks like NY Public Library will be open tomorrow. Can't wait.

Excellent News. Well today even more things open, so you've got American Museum of Natural History that reopens as does the TOTR, and there are limited subway service too. (from Times Square going Uptown).

Don't diss Macy's, Their choice is much better than Debenhams. They do clothes that fit me!!

Glad you got to enjoy the Met for nowt! :D One thing, is that this will be a holiday you'll never forget, so keep walking, you can rest on your flight home!

Finally, Thurs & Fri, Bus, Subway, LIRR, and Metro North are all free.
