We have two children (who will be 14 and 9 next year) and we have always had mediteranean beach holidays. We fancy something different next year and wonder if New York would be suitable for a break with the kids. We are thinking of a week next July. Anyone any advice?

I didn't take my kids when I went to NY I'm jan but I saw absolutely loads that would of been of interest to my girls and I plan to go back and take them with me.

July is quite hot, with no pool etc. maybe Easter might be a better time

Going to New York very soon. When I have been in the past with my pay as you go O2 Android phone I have had to connect to a specific loacl network to be able to make voice calls. The advice was on the O2 website. However I can no longer find reference on their website to doing this. Has anyone here recently been to New York and used a pay as you go O2 mobile? If so did you have to conect to a specific network or have O2 got their own network there now?
I tried searching the forum but could not find an answer.
    Thank you

I would say budget-wise $150-$200 a night sounds about right, but obviously looking for the best deals, both for flights and hotels which is why I was asking about whether it is too early to be looking for deals. About the beds, I thought maybe there would be places that offer 2 singles, but 2 doubles in 1 room would also be fine. So am I right in saying that the two of us could split a $200 per room, as it is per room and not per person?
Location wise, as I mentioned before Manhattan would be preferable (nowhere specific though) although if you have any ideas about where we could stay in the surrounding areas, which would be easily accessible via subway, that would be great.

We stayed in the Pod 39 hotel recently in a bunk room for $179 a night. Great location in mid-town, rooms compact and bijou but fine considering rooms in NY are generally on the small side. Great bar on the 17th floor too....

You do realise that it will cost you £1 per minute to make a phone call to a landline and £1.50 to make a call to a UK mobile.

It will also cost you £1 per minute to receive a call, and 50p to send a text. 1MB of data will cost you £6.

At those prices, and on a PAYG phone, I would not be wanting to roam onto any network in the USA, it's just too damn expensive.

If you have to, you'll have a choice of either T-Mobile or AT&T as networks that you can join. Your phone will just choose one automatically, and you will be connected. Do double check that you have roaming on the phone, and ensure you know how to turn off data on the handset.

I have disabled data on roaming. I had been able to find the pay and go rates. It is just for a few brief calls. At home I use the 'phone more for data than calls so pay £10 a month and have accumulated enough for the calls.

Thanks for the info re the networks and that the phone will find them itself.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

We went in July with a 12 and 14 year old. Yes, it was hot and humid, but we have fab memories, and I'd forgotten about the weather conditions until your post. Going to subway stations was the worst bit, the trains themselves were fine. Buses were good too. Maybe not the best time, but it was the only time we could go,and we all loved it.
  • Hi all,
Going to New York in early december on honeymoon for 5nights, 9.30 am flight from LHR on the Saturday, return 10.30pm from JFK on the Thurs.
We've paid for flights, hotel and have bought NYC passes (they were on offer).
Have we gone a bit over on spending money though (or perhaps not), our budget for the two of us is about $4000, we have about $3,600 on Caxton Currency Cards and $400 cash. It is our honeymoon and neither one of us has had a proper holiday for about 7-8years now, so would rather be over the top than under.

We're planning on going for one nice meal on the Saturday evening at 'Waters Edge Restaurant' (we're staying in Queens/Long Island City), other than that just looking to stay away from touristy eats.

Considering Radio City Xmas show also.

    COUNTING THE DAYS!!

    Hi
    Thats ok

I have been checking for you... (well me to really ha ha)

Virgin doesnt have much (within the budget) apart from Mamara which would be good due to the type of room you need, but personally I think a little too far out (my opinion having stayed there) however our trip was still great the 1st time round.

Ba.com have prices just over the budget at the moment.
Last minute.com are starting to have deals for the beginning of December, so keep checking as the dates you want hopefully will appear soon with fingers crossed some good deals!

I'll keep checking and let you know what I come across. Its the time of year when I am keen to go back myself!! :D
