We are going in a few weeks time 3rd of June to 10th in NY then moving on to Boston until the 15th where we return to NY to fly home on 16th staying at a hotel near Airport.

We have DH, I & DS3 (15) can share room so a double with single, and then DS1 & Partner so another double. Would want AC and preferrably fridge for drinks. Liked the idea of having kitchen facilities but not an absoloute must as probs eat out most of the time but would be nice to have breakfast at room (just purely to save abit on cost). Would prefer similar location although DS2 who has been once to NY said anywhere below Central Park is OK but we have never been so are clueless but sounds like you got alot of experience:A. Hope this is helpful to you

Sorry forgot to add budget well the apartment we had booked was going to cost $2340 or around £1500 so if could get a little cheaper to make up for loss of deposit would be a bonus or around similar if not

First things first. Why stay near the airport? There is NOTHING there, Trust me, if you do that you'll kick yourself. Get back to the airport from BOS, get back to NYC, and enjoy your final evening vacation. It still takes times to get from the airport to an airport hotel, because of shuttles etc etc, and it ain't pretty round there. You're a captive audience, so hotel food is expensive etc etc.

Right, onto the hotel for the 3rd - 10th. 7 nights.

When on a budget, the first hotel I go for is the Country Inn & Suites. This isn't in Manhattan, but 1 hop away on the subway in Long Island City in Queens. This is where you'd book 2 hotel rooms.

1 room would have 2 Queen Beds (UK King Size), Fridge, Microwave, Free Internet, Free Breakfast, and the other room would have 1 Queen Bed, Fridge etc etc etc.

The bigger room costs $1,390.06, and the smaller room costs $1048.67 giving you a grand total of $2438.73. I know it is more than you were planning on paying, but this hotel is cheap.

Secondly, we can look at the cheapest apartment hotel in NYC, and this is Eastgate Tower. This is 2 beds in the bedroom, plus a sofa bed, and a full kitchen - This is coming out at $3031.19 which is $500 over your budget.

Now, I look at deals on Quikbook, I've found one - Sohotel in Soho, (love that area!), and this comes out at $2323 for the Regency Plus, which is for the maximum of 5 people. It is 2 doubles and a twin, all in one room. Not what you're wanting.

I now need to get creative and see what I can find. I really think trying to stay in Manhattan with a the budget, and room requirements you need just isn't going to happen. This is why these illegal apartments/hotels get you, it's kinda too good to be true, but is just about believable.

Super 8 Long Island City, is about half a mile from a subway station. It's only a short hop back into Manhattan (as per the Country Inn, but that is much closer), but this is a bit cheaper.

A room with 2 queen beds is coming up at $1,182.47 and then a room for 2 is coming in at $984.13 giving you a grand total of $2166.60 (inc taxes)

That is what I've come up with. I wouldn't risk hotwire, because of the way you want the room/s, and priceline only guarantees a room for 2 people in 1 bed. Hope you can work something out, and one is suitable that I've mentioned above.

    Hope that helps.

Hello, I am new to this forum but have been reading this thread on and off for the last few days and am very impressed with the amount of helpful and friendly information it includes.

I am planning to take my family to New York next March for my Mother's 50th Birthday, and have been looking up package deals on expedia.co.uk

The prices a week or so ago seemed to indicate we could get a decent hotel and flights for around £650 per person but now the prices seem to be rising.

Is it best to book as soon as possible or do you think it's worth waiting until nearer the time in the hope of getting a better deal? Obviously I'll be gutted if we can't get a good deal nearer the time and don't want to miss out on what will be the trip my Mum's always wanted.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

March next Year? Book in November or December IMO. March is normally cheap, because it is the end of low season, flights are probably only just out, so are sky high. However, if you want to book now, then book it. I personally wouldn't so far in advance, I'm only JUST starting to plan my August 2012 holiday, and will book that in June.

OK thanks for your quick reply. Do you think we'll be able to get a better deal if we book late this year then? Is expedia generally a good place to look for package deals or is it better to shop around and potentially book flights/hotel separately? We're going early March, possibly leaving mid-February.

I was looking at hotels such as the Marriott or the NY Hilton on expedia. Are these likely to be fully booked nearer the time? Thanks again for all your help.

firstly welcome to MSE and its forums of helpfulness. Firstly and you will hear this a fair bit from me but we dont know where you live are you from the Uk even and how long would you like to stay in NYC for . £650 seems cheap for a flight and anymore than 2 or 3 nights at best from UK although March is a cheaper month compared to some . Also price isnt everything as you may be offered hotels by the airports so a good distance away from where you want to be . So can you come back with a little more info and details for your stay for us . & again welcome to MSE & NYC forum

20 mins tops to the centre (that will be times square)as a general point but all parts of New York are much better transport systems than uk and easy to get the feel and must say alot safer too (normally) just dont be a tourist,

It takes 5 minutes on the Subway. That is 1 stop, and you're at Lexington Ave, and 59th Street, which puts you near Bloomingdales, Central Park, 5th Avenue for shopping.

It takes 14 minutes to get to Times Square.

You're less than a 5 minute walk from the subway station. It is really convenient for getting into and around Manhattan.

My apologies. We are indeed travelling from the UK and will be hoping to stay in NYC for a week. The majority of packages I was looking at had hotels in the centre, Manhatten area, but flights to Newark but all of the reviews said that travelling from the airport via train was inexpensive and didn't take too long?

To give you a rough idea of prices I was in NY a week ago for 5 nights (over the easter weekend) flying from Heathrow to Newark with BA; we used the trains for transfer (very easy). I booked the trip for myself and the OH in November 11 and we stayed at Yotel; 5/10 minute walk to Times Square. The price for the trip was £750 per person
What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...

That seems reasonable enough. Whas your hotel nice? Also, what company did you book the trip with?
