As posted earlier, going to NYC for 5 days in mid December for my 30th.
Looking at trying to sort out plans for the days we are there, covering all the standard tourist things but with MSEr ideas too (i.e. Rockafella instead of Rockafella etc)
Any recommendations from anyone for what to do when there without ploughing through the 180 previous pages on this thread are very welcome, whether it is visiting a cafe for an hour, or a plan for three days.
Got a budget of about £300 a day for two of us.
Also any preferences for any websites to buy through at discounted rates (for shows/attractions etc).
Thanks in advance.0 -
well its mid december there no better show in town than watching the big department store windows Macys have fantastic walk through xmas areas and shop windows all xmassy. IMHO do the Top of the Rock instear of the Empire State Building. Statue of Liberty is a shall i or not. IT WILL BE COLD very cold. You can ride the staten Island ferry (free) for a good pic of SoL . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Think you may be a tad confused as they are very very different places, did you mean rockafella vs empire state?, if so rockafella anyday

Hi
Looking to go out on Nov 23rd for macy's parade on 24th and sightseeing then fancied skiing or possibly a trip to boston, returning to NY for xmas shopping and tree lighting on the 30th. Flying home on 1st Dec.
Any advice on where to ski would be great.
Also any suggestions for where to stay in NY. Likely to go by myself so prices for hotels seem expensive. Anyone tried couch surfing or know of any reasonable apartments, or other alternatives?
Sooo excited about xmassy NY!!

Hi looking for some advice from all you experts.
Do you think it is worth buying the New York city pass, there are 5 of us going in April and we do want to visit many of the attractions listed.
There is a discount online for them just now which runs out on Tuesday do you think it is worth buying just now or do they always offer discounts.
Thanks in advance0 -
There are loads of passes around, and a lot of them don't give you that much discount, but just ease of use, because everything is prepaid, but also you're at risk of hopping from attraction to attraction and missing New York itself.
However, there is one pass that is worth a look and it's the "Go Select" pass, which enables you to choose your attractions that you want to visit, and then gives you a good chunk of discount. http://m4rk.in/qP7uv9
As for the limited time discount, well, they're like those sales at DFS, which just keep going on and on and on and on...... ;00 -

Apartment rentals (if you rent the whole apartment) are illegal in NYC for a short stay under 30 days. You could look on airbnb and choose Private Room, which gives you hosted accommodation, and this is perfectly legal though sometimes against the rules of the apartment block (but you don't know that really, and it should be the person renting their spare room out to cover off that one!)
Alternatives are staying somewhere near Manhattan, so if you're flying into JFK, look at hotels in Long Island City, or if you're flying into EWR, then look at hotels in either Jersey City, or Hoboken (near the PATH stations, which give you a cheap ride into Manhattan).
I prefer LIC, as you're on the NYC Subway, and your week subway pass will get you everywhere..

Thanks Mark I will have a look at your suggestions, did think myself that there was probably ongoing discounts I won't rush in.0
