hi all i am taknig my daughter to new york in feb 2012 for a suprise for her 18th we have a budget of £3000 , which is spending money and accomadation for 4 nights, 1st question is that enough, and 2nd question where should we stay , definatly wanna go shopping and a show, but all the hotels i look at are for double beds and would really like something with 2 singles or 2 doubles, thanks in advance for your replies,

That's definately enough spending money for 4 nights. Is there just you two? Depending how crazy you want to go shopping.

Hotel i'll leave that to other families who have been.

Generally New York isn't that expensive i didn't think.. I spent a grand in 10 days by myself plus another 900 on clothes etc.

That was including getting taxi's everywhere (Splitting between the 3 of us) Going out every night for beers. All the sightseeing costs & food. Meal every night (Little Italy etc) and food during the day.

If its NY Fashion Week. While i don't know about costs. Hotels are more likely to be booked up. So book as soon as so you get a decent place.

Easiest way to find if it's more expensive is get a quote for the same hotel on a different time of year.
  • Hi - will be travelling to NYC in May 2012, this will be for my girlfriend's 40th (oh and we will be getting married there too - on her birthday!!). There's the two of us and our daughter who will be 3 at the time. Budget is £2800ish for flights and hotel.

Question is should I book sooner rather than later, I've heard better to leave til January for better deals, but concerned about missing out. Also, any suggestions for hotels suitable for us.

    Many Thanks!

Has anyone been to the American Museum of Natural History?

Am planning for our trip next year and DD wants to go to AMNH because Night At The Museum is one of her favourite films.

I know it was filmed in a studio, but can anyone tell me how realistically the inside of the museum was reproduced on the movie set? Or not?
I never saw the films, however the AMNH was great, I would thoroughly recommend going. It's also next to Central Park, so might be a day to combine the two.

See both but never connected but wouldnt it be great to have a museum after "THE" museum . With all the areas and historical parts covered. (even come to life) Do like night at the museum .& agreed ANHM is good fun esp for Americans because although we think we know America theres so much we dont --Go to Madame Tussauds in X square and see who you know and who you dont ..

    Quick update.
I emailed AMNH, thry must get asked this alot because they emailed me back
"There really are very few similarities. However, the Moai (Easter Island head "Dum Dum") is here!" and sent me a link detailing the similarities/differences.

What You Will NOT Find at the American Museum of Natural History
The statue of Theodore Roosevelt on his horse in his Rough Riders uniform.
The Temple of Dendur and many other Egyptian artifacts which can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    Dioramas depicting:
    • the Roman Empire's soldiers
    • the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (the "cowboy" diorama)
    • Lewis and Clark with Sacagawea
    • Attila the Hun
We've only got 3 days and its our first visit so there'll be plenty to keep us busy. Might leave AMNH for a (hopefully) future visit.

I agree it is probably well worth a visit, but probably needs more time than we could give it on this trip.
So much to do & see...... not enough time to do everything!
