Everything & Anything New York City

No, nyc.gov won't really cover anything outside of New York City, and because NJ is a different state, you won't have anything of a register.
There are some 2 bed options in hotels in NYC, so you could look at places like the Eastgate Tower, Beacon, etc etc. April is normally reasonably priced for standard hotels, but with Easter thrown into the mix it does bump prices up.
However, April is many months away now, so I personally wouldn't book anything now, as there are no deals, and some hotels still have not released any availability for April at all.

Thanks I do realise that, but did you say there was a New York register of everything that's classified as "legal"? I know the NJ places won't appear on it but we're still considering Manhattan or possibly other areas too, so I'd still be keen to check such a register, if I do come across some place. There are some 2 bed options in hotels in NYC, so you could look at places like the Eastgate Tower, Beacon, etc etc. April is normally reasonably priced for standard hotels, but with Easter thrown into the mix it does bump prices up.

That's good advice - thank you. I'll check out those places. Approx when DO hotels release availability or tend to have deals? I expect it varies greaty, but would you say six months prior to the trip? Three months?0 -
Yeah, 6 months to get rates, and anything up to around 3 months before some good deals start appearing.
As for legality of stays when it comes to NYC, you can query the Buildings Information Systems - http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bsqpm01.jsp - it's a rather dull website, but if you type in an address and it isn't classified as H9 - Hotels - within the first results page, then it's most probably illegal. There are other things you can look at such as Certificate of Occupancy, and then you have to understand the law, how many units are allowed before the rental is illegal etc etc, it's a real minefield.
One way you can reduce costs, and have an apartment rental is to go onto airbnb, and look at their "hosted" stayed (normally listed as a "Private Room"). This is where you're staying with the people living in the apartment itself, but you can bag a bargain, if you don't mind the sharing and the social aspect of it all.

Try expedia or lastminute .com and you can pick a area then a price (or the other way around) others will be along soon but a better clue on dates will help try to stay a sat night for a better deal. Or find a deal then ask here what the reviews are like . Good luck & have a good nyc break. Phatty shes killing me .hahaha:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

£900 works out to be around $250 before tax, which is about right for New York / Manhattan at this time of year. October is a great time to visit, as the weather is normally quite good, the humidity is gone.
Now, there are very few hotels that offer twin beds. What you normally get in NYC is 2 double or 2 queen beds. Twin beds really are a continental thing! Without knowing exact dates, it becomes difficult where to suggest, I'll pick some random dates and see what I can find.
I know you said you want to stay between 30th - 50th streets in Manhattan, but if you want to cut costs, this restriction really has to disappear, and if you use the subway, your hotel is near the subway, it shouldn't be needed when you're working for a budget. I've given examples, with Long Island City and Brooklyn.
There seems to be very little for any dates in Manhattan that is less than $250.
So, October for 5 nights in New York City.
Z Hotel - Long Island City - this is a luxurious boutique hotel a short hop away from Manhattan, $1205 (£755) including tax for 5 nights from October 21st - twin room (they are a few, not many)
Country Inn Suites - Long Island City - More basic, room with 1 King bed. (A US King, is huge. Think UK Super King size (6ft). $850 (£532) (5 nights October 13th)
Hotel Le Jolie - Williamsburg - Brooklyn. Williamsburg is a hot bed of activity after midnight. It's where all the cool people hang out drinking the to wee hours of the morning, and it's really happening there. During the day, it's calm, quiet, and relaxing, with people sitting in coffee shops reading a book to while away the hours. Most hipsters who live in Williamsburg are unemployed as they're "artists" struggling to live (however, can afford cocktails and beers after dark). I love Williamsburg. $1320 for a room with twin beds (5 nights from october 13th), £825
Aloft - Brooklyn - a New hotel, uber cool, downtown brooklyn, so the furthest away from your required locations. It'll take about 30 minutes to travel to Times Square from here. King Bed. $1340 (£839)
Cosmopolitan Hotel - Tribeca - Manhattan - A lovely village vibe around this area, with a wonderful cheap hotel just on the outskirts of Tribeca. Near to Century 21 for shopping, the World Trade Center and Memorial Site is close by too. A room with 2 double beds is $1875.59 and this is the most basic hotel that I've chosen. It's expensive to be in Manhattan. (£1171)
Hope that helps and gives you some other choices. If you're only using the hotel as a base, then it makes sense to stay somewhere cheaper, and use the amazing Subway to get around. Limiting yourself to midtown, will cost more.
