Hi,
My sister is going to NY with her family. They are going to need two rooms ( sister & partner plus 1 13yr old) and then they will need another room for my nephew and his g/f. They are going to stay for four nights but don't want to spend more than £800 on rooms. Is it possible to get a decent hotel for this, they thought about an apartment but I have been reading something about it being illegal. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks
Without dates, it is a very difficult question to answer. In February or March, it is probably doable. However, other times of years, it will be nowhere near.
You're looking at $160 per night, per room including taxes, which is a very very tight budget for a room with 2 double beds.
Now, you could get a room with 2 double beds and 1 sofa bed at somewhere like Eastgate Tower. This works out at $1725 for 4 nights, which is around £1000, but the random dates I plugged in might not be anywhere close to what your dates will bring back.

Fashion week in 2012 is Feb 9th - 16th 2012 and September 13th - 20th 2012, depends what fashions you want to see!
There is still another Fashion week for 2012 is on September 8th - September 15th 2011... if that makes sense..

Hi,

I'm still going to say that they're not going to get 2 rooms for that money in Manhattan. Eastgate Tower has no availability for the room I described earlier.
I can't see anything within budget on Quikbook, which is normally one of the cheapest places.
So, they either have to up their budget, or stay elsewhere in New York City. There have been some new hotels open, and Aloft, Brooklyn is one of them. Awesome looking hotel, and still got some good offers on
A room with 2 double beds costs $220 a night though, so still over budget.
I can't help any more really, as the budget is far too low for an expensive time of year.

I've been researching for our visit hopefully next April. apparently its too soon to book flights and they are coming up at £520 + at the moment. Hopefully they will reduce a bit. I thought that I may as well book a hotel as I could cancel & rebook if anything changes, but quite afew that I've tried are telling me that there is no availability for my dates. its not easter so does this mean that they are booked up or they havn't released the rooms yet?:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

8 Months might be a bit too far in the future for the hotels to have released availability. Also, if you did see availability, it will probably be rack rate, and not discounted, they don't start appearing until around 3 months before you want to stay...

That's interesting about rack rate. I booked hotels for New York for this July last November. When the first price I got went up £20, I decided to book one with a cancellation policy in the hope that I would get something cheaper. Prices actually increased by about £200, and I'm really pleased I booked as early as I did.0

Jazzy_B... swings and roundabouts really, and then you really have to factor in the supply and demand. Say a major corporate decides to hold an exhibition bringing in more people into the city, then the demand increases, supply falls, and prices rise. August, notoriously cheap, this year is more expensive thanks to the World Police and Fire Games.
It's a funny old game, and it's a tough one when people want recommendations, and all I do is say what my experiences are, which suit some people, but not others, and also is only what I know from months that I've visited.
with that said, the cheapest prices normally do appear much closer to check in date, than further away, before sky rocketing if you need a hotel on a very short timescale. Check sites like travelzoo and you can see that the offers are for hotel stays currently though to mid September, nothing yet for October.
