Is December a good month for visiting NY? I'd like to go for my 40th. I know it will be cold, but I thought it might be nice to go whilst it's all christimassy. Should I be booking now or wait a while? Package or hotel and flights seperately?

    thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any experience of staying in a B&B in New York?

butterfly - look at my trip report from Dec 2009 - not as cold as everyone makes out (esp considering the last 2 winters in this country) GO FOR IT!

Thinking of getting a surprise NY city break for my OH - by himself.

He isnt keen on packages - but obviously if that works out cheaper, he can go his own way once there - SO can anyone advise best place for buying flight/central accommodation for 4 or 5 nights for a single person please.

No specific dates - flexible as he is now semi retired but say springtime, early summer next year please. Is into art, architecture.

Many thanks. Ive spent hours googling and get results from about £700 up to over £2k for a single room

    Many thanks

NB reading back a bit on here it seems like I am looking too early for next spring? But if there is a general answer to the best place to look for flights and accommodation or indeed a package, Id be grateful.

They're normally more expensive than hotels, and not what us brits think B&Bs are. What are you specifically looking for?

Flights - kayak.co.uk or the airlines own websites
Hotels - quikbook.com is a good starting point

    Packages - expedia.co.uk

I will throw in lastminute.com too for a "packaged" holiday sometimes they can offer different to expedia for about equal prices.Sometimes a good offer comes along .

We are going to New York again in October this time we are staying on the Upper East Side for 8 nights ( last time it was UWS for 7 nights)

This time we are going to do things we didn't get around to last time and try some new things.

I wonder if anyone can tell me if they have done any of the following and what were their impressions:

    The High line

    Roosevelt Island

Newport shopping mall ( New Jersey)

    Atlantic Center ( shopping Mall~Brooklyn)

Leaf peeping tour ( Fall only, goes up to the Hudson Valley and stops off at the town of Westpoint)

Radio city Music Hall tour ( I fancy this but wonder if dh might find it boring?)

How safe is it around 94 th st & 2nd Ave ~UES ( technically Yorkville I think)?

How safe is the area around Fulton Ferry park (Brooklyn)? Day time, as we don't go out much at night, too tired as we are middle aged LOL

Lastly, last time we had a private transfer into NY from JFK this time and booked a car from Carmel on the return journey.

This time we will be getting a yellow cab, do you just join the que or do you have to go to the office to tell the despatcher where you want to go?

Thank you for any help and insight you may have:)

    The High line

The High Line is a lovely park built on old railway lines elevated from the city. I've done Phase 1 twice, and now Phase 2 is open, which doubles the length.

Manhattan has plenty of shopping, I'm unsure why you'd want malls that just repeat shops that are available around Manhattan.

Safety - that age old question. Well, as NYC is one of the safest cities, and the safest big city in NYC, then the chances (especially in prime tourist areas) to be a victim of crime is very minimal. I went to Fulton Ferry Park about 4 years ago and only bumped into locals or tourists, and didn't spot anything. You also have the larger and newer Brooklyn Bridge Park you could venture to.

I don't get why people are so scared, and worried about safety. NYC is nothing like what you see on TV, because TV is dramatised...
