jammydodget41 - with that kind of budget, you can try Priceline - check out betterbidding, but I seriously doubt that in high season in NYC you'll get your 4* budget in Manahttan. You're talking a base rate of $162. Normally for a 4*, you will be looking over $200, if not nearer $250 per night.

Your budget will fit for hotels in Long Island City, and there might be some bargains around Brooklyn, but you may have to lower the 4* requirement, which by the way, doesn't mean the room will be any more special than a 3* hotel, it just means the hotel amenities (which in NYC you may not use), such as room service, restaurant on site, are available, where you don't get them in lower starred hotels.

Trailfinders flights to New York from London Heathrow

    24/10/2011 to 16/12/2011

Just come across them. Gutted that I paid over £100 more. That's the risk you take!

Having read every single submission on this thread, and I must say I have been very grateful for al of the opinions, but, there is a question I do not believe has been asked before:

I am travelling to NY in Aug. I have already got flights and have chosen a NJ hotel (Embassy Suites). I know several people do not advocate NJ hotels, but I got a FANTASTIC deal and even accounting for the bus fare each day, it is very good value. We also want to do more than NY city (Coast , Nat Parks , 6 Flags etc) which are all easierfrom NJ than Manhatten.

    My questions are:

What is best way of gettting from Newark Airport to Secaucus for family of 4 with 3-4 reasonablesize suitcaes + hand luggage ? (All advice and websites assume you are staying in Manhatten).

Any personal recommendations for beaches within 1 hr of Secaucus? (Have researched losts but recommendations go a long way)

How much will Brit Kids appreciate Ellis Island, if we have NO relatives connected with USA???

Any other 'Out of City' trips that are worth doing with a famiy (kids are 11 and 13 and not into shopping!!!!!!!!!!)

    Thanks for your help!!

At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, it depends on the children!

At that age, we struggled to get one of ours to stop saying "this is boring" anywhere he didn't want to be, which included numerous tourist attractions which most children appeared to be enjoying. This would then lead his brothers to say the same, over and over again. Which did not a pleasant and interesting outing make.

But then, he always was an 'awkward' child.

He improved once I started pre-warning him that whatever we were going to probably WAS going to be boring for him, but since we knew that, there was no need for him to keep saying so. And especially if we were with his grandparents he should keep his comments to himself until later.

And then I was able to start saying that I did not know if he was going to find this or that interesting or boring, but that I thought it MIGHT be interesting, and he should decide for himself but keep quiet if it was boring.

Sooooo, if your two are interested in history generally, they might find it fascinating. If they're as awkward as my eldest was, they might not, on principle ... I haven't been, so couldn't comment.

One thing I tried to do was give my 3 cheap and small guide books to try to get them to say before we arrived what they'd like to do. That might be more successful with yours than it was with mine ... we'd booked 2 nights and didn't have anywhere to be for night 3 of our trip, but at that stage they decided they'd like to spend another day, so it was fortunate we were able to extend our hotel booking!

You realise though that it's going to be HOT in August? As in Hot, Sticky and Humid?

If any female plans to go to Metroplitan in the next few days, please PM me for a free temporary members pass, valid up until 22nd July. This gives you free entry, 20% off in gift shop and you skip the queue for the Alexander McQueen exhibition. Happy to post first class.

Just got back. I'll try to answer any recent questions later, as I've under mountains of washing right now!

    Hey boblibarn,

I'm assuming that, by central you mean close to shops and times square etc, If so, check out the Holiday Inn West 57th St, my sister and I stayed there last march and it was perfect for us. Literally 2 blocks away from central park and around 7/8 (someone correct me if im wrong, we didnt count) to Times Square and 5th Avenue etc.

The rooms were huge, we had 2 queen beds, tv, chair, dresser, desk with coffee etc, and a big(ish) bathroom, the hotel was clean, staff were friendly and it was close to everything we wanted to see/do on our first visit.

    Hi,

My sister is going to NY with her family. They are going to need two rooms ( sister & partner plus 1 13yr old) and then they will need another room for my nephew and his g/f. They are going to stay for four nights but don't want to spend more than £800 on rooms. Is it possible to get a decent hotel for this, they thought about an apartment but I have been reading something about it being illegal. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks

£800 for 2 rooms? i think you'd be lucky! What sort of accommodation are they looking for? Shared bathroom/private? Where abouts in NY? Manhattan or outskirts?
