Anyone who stays on Manhattan Island is a knob jockey.

Would that be " Manhattan Island " as in Treasure Island ?:rotfl:

It would be nice if the petty squabbling could stop in this thread. People are coming to look for advice and answers to questions about NYC, not have to wade through name calling and insults like anyone staying on Manhattan Island is a "knob jockey".

    I agree.
The one positive outcome, however, is that the New York sticky now has several interesting and informative pub crawls.
I'm wondering also if it might be useful to have a specific thread aimed at great New York bars, particularly ones in areas with hotels favoured by MSEers.

I've already said that you're more than welcome to write more guides..

I am looking forward to trying out a couple of the bars on both of the pub crawls listed here.

Nobjocki, i think that would be a good idea. As much as i like exploring different areas of new york city, i do also like being able to grab a quick drink before/after dinner, or on the way back to the hotel. I usually stay in the Midtown area, so if people have suggestions of good bars in this area, it would be much appreciated.

Where exactly in Midtown? Really don't want to start recommending a bar that is about 4 miles away from your hotel (both the bar, and the hotel are still in Midtown)

Just got back from our first meeting to sort out our trip. We leave Manchester on 3rd June for 4 nights staying at the New Yorker. Some have been before but many years ago, so up to date info would be a great help.

First, looking at booking transport from JFK, American Clasic Limos can provide a mini bus for $149 has anyone used them.

We would like to go on a sightseeing tour bus to get our bearings, any recommendations?

Have read all previous posts and have picked up some ideas, but need help putting them into sensible order.

Must do, TOTR is it better to book before we go. Central Park plus meal/brunch at the Boat House. Thinking of evening walking around Grenwick village plus meal (not expensive) Tiffany's, Bloomingdales. Bar 230, 5th Ave. Boat trip to see waterfront views of the Statue but not to get off. Would like to find the name of the Irish Bar near TS that is run by the Liverpool supporter. Quite happy to pick up food at Deli's for quick snacks during the day. We are not into museums etc.

Any help you give will be appreciated. Our friends 60th the day we travel and want to make it special for her. But, don't have money for expensive meals etc.

$149 for a mini bus? Carmel and Dial 7 as a pre booked car service, have mini vans, and these are cheaper. (Just noticed your title, and there are 10 of you), Mini vans from Dial 7 will hold 5 people with 5 pieces of luggage, so you might be able book 2 of these for $120.

TOTR rarely has queues, also, if you pre book, and the weather is atrocious that day, you've kinda lost your money. Greenwich Village you'll be able to get a great meal if that is where you mean.

A HOHO bus tour is ok to get your bearings, a lot of people recommend just staying on for the full loop, but it is about 4 hours worth, and it's slow going. I'm not a fan, I find time better spent, going to an area, and walking around, with some bullet points of what I want to see.

If you want to just see views of the statue of liberty, then you could try the Staten Island Ferry. This is a commuter ferry, which is free of charge, and goes over to Staten Island, You can get some shots of the SOL, but you do need a reasonable zoom lens. Circle Line also do pay for cruises, that will go closer.

Don't mind travelling about Midtown for some bars if someone has a really "can't miss" bar that they want to tell people about. Will be staying on West 56th Street (btw. 5th & 6th Ave) so around that general area is fine but we both walk a lot so it's not a big deal to walk a fair few blocks.

Head over to 9th Ave between 40th - 50th street, and there are plenty of good places around that kinda area. Rudy's Bar is an old treasure, and you can get a free hot dog with your beer too. Proper locals, proper dive bar, and a great atmosphere.

In the other direction, I've already mentioned it, Ginger Man, which is 36th Street and Fifth, and this is a great beer bar. Over 60 draughts, and a reasonable bar menu.

Other notable choices would be the 2 Heartland Breweries, one of which is 5th Avenue and 51st Street, the T/S Location is 43rd Street, at 7th Avenue.

Midtown isn't my first choice for drinking, but that's just my opinion. There is plenty of choice around, but I'd still head out of the area straight around your hotel, as your hotel is surrounded by hotels, and big businesses, rather than places where people live.
