I have only ever brought them when they were on offer, so we plan when we are going to go a bit. First time we paid £495, but that was back in April 2008, then we paid £630 in March 2009 and £550 in November 2010.
You can just upgrade one way if the space is more important for you in one direction, but not sure how I would cope with an outbound PE flight and inbound Econ.
My mum has travelled WT+ on BA ( their equivilent of PE on virgin). She said it was very similar, but she found the seats more comfortable.0 -
We upgraded to Virgin's Premium Economy at check in as it was on special offer. It was lovely to have a bit of extra leg room, but that was the only advantage for me, with my long legs, and the difference wasn't that great as soon as the person in front reclined their seat. Having now been to LA and NY a couple of times, I'd only go premium econ again if it was at a very good price. I preferred the economy meal too, but that's just me being a poor eater! We didn't board that much earlier than everyone else, so I didn't really notice that. From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0

This is the 2010 thread, should I create a 2011 thread and ask for it to be a sticky, or are we going to keep using this thread?Don't think we need a new thread until this one reaches the forum threshold really. Why take up more space?
Maybe next one needs to not mention the year so it won't be so specific?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Ok so i have attempted to read through this thread, but i'm still in need of help, me and my OH are going to go to New York think on 31/08 for 1 week, he wanted to stay at Waldolf Astoria but on checking reviews it doesnt look to be very good so my question is: where should we stay? want to stay in the centre
OH also wants to go and watch a New York Yankees game so got to think about that0 -
Waldolf is ok no problems its just peoples expectations that differs IYKWIM (go onto tripadvisor and there will be a complaint saying "went to the Waldolf and the Consierge didnt open the door in time.and doff his cap"They wouldnt say that if it wasnt The Waldolf. Never stayed there myself nor would i want to because its seems snobby and stuffy, but dont let that distract thats just my opinion as a rag 4rse scouser who doesnt like the fuss. I like clean cool(temp) places that are a little open with a good view also. Stayed at The Westin Times Square with wheelchair user and was brilliant very modern very hip but very expensive too (a little cheaper than the Waldolf at the time) Right in the thick of it good /bad you choose, i liked it but i dont sleep at home or away and if you need sleep the constant woop woop from the 911 police fire monsters below can upset you. Ok with windows shut (another no no 4 me)stayed at the Grand Hyatt end of Nov a good bright modern reasonable hotel right next to Grand Central.
IMHO..... If you can afford and want the Waldolf go for it. Its Iconic well presented and always spotless (some small rooms and some bigger often for the same price.) You have set your sights high so you know your paying big bucks and not looking for a cheap hotel room to crash in.There are so many hotels in NYC these are a spot only. others always like their areas and blocks (next time i want to stay around The Flatiron Area as i like the Vibe early evening its slower and with a good friendly pace and some good foodies) Manhattan isnt that big and anywhere is close to everywhere really and all within a easy sub/bus/taxi or walk away. as for the Yankees game its a journey anyway and work out tickets dates in advance so you know what your doing. best wishes & enjoy NYC:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
Hi all!
I have just booked my flights to New York - the plan is to land at JFK, hire a car and drive down the coast to Florida, spend a week (or whatever) in MIL's villa there and then a flight back to NYC to spend 2 or 3 nights in the city before we fly back to Manchester.
We are there for 16 nights in total
We have done NY before a couple of years ago and had a whale of a time, but this time we have an 11 year old and a 2 year old with us so it will be a completely different experience.
Anyone done NY with kids? Can anyone recommend any family friendly hotels?
Off to read some of the thread!!

Went to NYC last oct with 2 year old daughter and had fantastic time the little one loved it.
The hotel where I stayed was not specifically child friendly in terms of stuff for her to do but to be honest did not spend much time there anyway.
Was always doing something that appealed to us all, central park zoo, going up ESB and stuff like that.
A lot of people said I was mad going there for a week with child in tow as it is an adults holiday destination but I beg to differ there is something there for everyone.0 -
Evening everyone!
After what seems like days of reading I've finally reached the end of this thread - haven't tackled the previous instalments yet as I think my head may explode with all the information on here!
We are in the very early stages of planning this year's holiday - looking at about 2 weeks in total, definately in the US somewhere and hopefully including New York for at least a few days, but when I've been trying to roughly price things up I'm completely shocked at the prices. I know NY is notoriously expensive and don't think I'm completely out of touch with hefty city hotel prices having visited San Francisco and LA last year but  Ideally we'd be looking at a budget of about £100 a night, could stretch to more like £120-£130 if I budget a bit carefully elsewhere but this just doesn't seem to be possible from what I've seen so far.
Our dates aren't confirmed yet but we're looking at sometime in mid to late September - is this a really expensive time to visit or is something going on in the city around that time that anyone is aware of? Has anyone been at this time of year and can advise roughly what you would expect to pay for a mid-range kind of hotel room? We stayed in a combination of various chain places in California - Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites, Best Western - as well as a few nice independent places so not looking for anything really fancy.
Just to give you an idea (I've been using 26/09 to 01/10 as our rough dates for comparison), having looked at some of the hotels mentioned here, the New Yorker is coming out at $374.25 a night, the Cosmopoliitan is $279.00 for a king room (no way we will both sleep squeezed into a cheaper double), the Pod Hotel is $309.00 and nyma is $299.24. And these are all prices before taxes etc are added!
I'm not looking to book anything right now and am more than happy to keep trawling the net for deals closer to the time (did that until a couple of weeks before we left last year trying to get better and better offers!) if it's likely something will come up more within our budget, but don't want to get to the stage of booking flights etc and getting all excited about going to NYC if there's no way we'd be able to afford it!
Any input from the experts on here would be much appreciated
P.S. I have looked into the option of staying out of Manhattan, in New Jersey etc, but as it would be our first trip I'd prefer to stay properly in the city if we can - also think I'd find it a pain not being able to nip back to the hotel easily of an afternoon and so on.0 -
Thanks Johnny -I am not looking for a hotel with activities/a playroom or anything, I just want somewhere where well behaved children are welcomed IYSWIM. We stayed at the Westin Times Square last time and it just didn't seem like a 'practical' hotel to take kids.
I had forgotten about Central Park Zoo - although we have got the giant pandas at the National Zoo in Washington DC!!
The baby will be happy to be anywhere we are! It is the 11 year old that will need entertaining!please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -

On the yankees front i found the best place for tickets is stub hub.
However some words of warning:
Baseball is the most boring dragged out game known to man, add to that theres no real atmosphere, unlike football, rugby etc.
It can be uber expensive if you buy anything at yankee stadium
If you want a beer dont forget your i.d as regardless of how old you look you will be carded.
Saying that its an experience and the yankees are the man utd of the baseball worldLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
