When travelling from outside the EU to the UK you are allowed to bring in the following, provided you travel with the items and do not intend to sell them.
    • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
    • 4 litres of still table wine
    • 1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs
    • 16 litres of beer
    • 60cc/ml of perfume
    • £390 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs
Please note: From Dec 1 2008 you can 'mix and match' products in the alcohol category, and the tobacco category, provided you do not exceed your total allowance. For example you could bring in 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars, which is 50 per cent of your cigarette allowance and 50 per cent of your cigar allowance.

I'm slighlty confused after reading about personal allowances. If I want to buy myself some clothes, jewellery and a pair of boots (rather than buying them here, as they're just to wear in NYC), do I need to be careful how much I'm spending or I might have to pay extra tax at the airport, or would I only have to pay taxes if I was buying them for resale? Sorry if I'm being dumb!

Just check everything is ok,then take tags/packaging off,crumple/wear them, then chuck 'em in your suitcase. they wont know if they were bought there or you had them already. Thats what we do:rotfl:

  • Not that I'm going to, because I'm not planning on buying very much...but if I brought back more than £390, would I have to pay additional tax on it, or would it be taken away from me? Thanks for all your responses so far :)

Hi, I just booked hotel through name your price at priceline- the Warwick....is it any good?! Hope so!!

Also, bit confused about the Ground Zero tour/museums on offer. I went in 2007 and there was a museum (?) just across from Century 21 but it was fully booked so I was disappointed not to be able to visit so am making it a priority for this trip. Anyone have any advice about which tour/museum?

    Thanks

Just back from NY & did the Uncles Sam's walking tour. Two hours of a really interesting tour lead by someone who was there on the day (not in the towers), but she gave a very interesting perspective of the day & following on from the day.

I would recommend (take a tissue).

we bought a fair amount of stuff in NYC all i did was as you say check fitment etc and chuck all packaging away then just put in suitecase.
as it goes even that was not needed as customs at LHR was deserted when we arrived back.

as phatbear says technically breaking the law but the way i see it with clothes it is very hard for customs to tell where you bought it.
cigs and booze however are a different story.
