The last item i advertised on feecycle was a hi fi with seperate speakers. Was quite old and bulky and heavy

The only response was from some foreign student who could not drive and wanted me to meet up somewhere so I could give her the hifi.

i said no chance, collection only.

Then she asked if it would fit in a some carrier bags so she could take it on the bus.

Needless to say she was refused item.

    I love Freecycle! :T

Have received an almost new Ikea sofa bed, filing cabinet, office chair and brand new carpet tiles for my home office in garden. Loads of fantastic shrubs in containers, bulbs and plants. Magazines and records. For my son moving into unfurnished accommodation we've received a portable tv, settee, chair, headboard and curtains. Some of these were freecycled again when he moved into furnished lodgings.

I've given away, car parts and accessories, boxes of books, kitchen accessories, clothes, greenhouse, topsoil and childrens toys.

People have come when they've said they would. I've always made a point of keeping in contact when making arrangements to collect. Everyone has been courteous and helpful. And I've noticed that people comment that they like passing on things to someone who often gives on Freecycle. I have a fairly noticeable useable name.

Such a shame when there are bad experiences. But surely I'm not the only one who thinks it's all been good??

I find that if ever I offer something decent, that I know will be popular, the same names crop up again and again. Not aways asking for the item, but often posting their own "wanted" ad for the same thing.

I did once offer around 10 binliners of clothes and got over 50 responses, so I replied to around 10 people, saying they could come and have a pick through the stuff and take what they wanted. One woman contacted me and asked if she could have the lot, because there was no point travelling 5 miles to our house if she was only going to get a couple of bags full. How rude!
  • I'm having a clearout myself this week so i thought i would give freecycle a go. And i know it's probably not in the spirit of things but after seeing how greedy people are it's put me off and i might go down the charity shop route.

All the offered ads are for broken electric goods or broken furniture suitable for firewood (fair enough) but the wanted ads are for plasma tv's, full house furniture, everything you need for a new baby(cot, highchair, pram, sterlizer, clothes etc her list goes on and on. And they all state nearly new!!

I have a portable tv with no remote (can be used with the buttons on the front). I found somebody wanting on for a 17 month old childs room but it had to have a remote!

I have a very large garden that has become overgrown due to the fact that I am now unable to care for it and my husband had a stroke last year, so I put it on free cycle if someone wanted it to grow their own veg etc, there is also 3 greenhouses that they could use, but was refused by the admin because is does does not comply with landfill, but they allow adverts for people to give away/advertise chickens , cocks and kittens, puppies

Try listing here http://landshare.channel4.com/ - it's the campaign that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was promoting matches growers with landowners.
  • I got a lovely cat from Gumtree but unfortunately the free section of our local one in newcastle has become a spam fest. [Grumble]

Our Freegle has a wanted for not one but two Freeview boxes by one person. Someone else wants a specific type of hoover..another a pine or stripped pine dining table and chairs.
The way I see it is if you need it enough to ask for on Freecyle then you will take it, even if it's not exactly what you like.
  • My local freegle is an animal testing plants dream, a constant stream of cats/dogs/birds/rabbits etc. Its a bit disturbing.
Due to OH being self employed with his own shop we ask people to collect from there so we don't reveal our home address.
We re offer somethings every month, large boxes from delivery that people might want for moving house, a few bags of dvd style cases, and massive cardboard envelopes that our poster get delivered in. The local art students and achitects love them as they are a good size for transporting large pieces of art or blueprints.
We have a lot of no-shows though, but it isn't to bad as it tends to go eventually.

just a thought..try and find your local allotments, and ask one of the owners there if there is a queue for allotments, there normally is, and tell them your situation..it could be beneficial for both sides.:T
TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....
  • I started a rant about freecycle on another forum I post on. I'll just copy or paste some of the best "wanteds" I've got

WANTED: need a mens bike (belfast)
WANTED: WANTED: Treadmill / running machine - belfast (East belfast)
    WANTED: small dish washer (belfast)
    WANTED: Washing Machine (Lisburn)
WANTED: Waterbed (water bed) King/Queen size (Banbridge)
WANTED: 6 Seater Table & Chairs (Belfast)
WANTED: looking for a good pc (belfast)
WANTED: Wanted: boys bicycle for 7-10yr old ( east belfast)
WANTED: wanted suite of furniture (lisburn)
    WANTED: Garden Shed (East Belfast)
    WANTED: Wanted: Surfboard (Belfast)

I have to say this thread has thrown me....

some of you have labled people as "crazies" for asking for sofas etc when i have seen plenty of good condition 3 piece suites and other furniture given away on the 2 freecycle groups i check,

and there is very little in the list of 'bests' that i havent seen offered at one time or another (except perhaps the waterbed) people are always giving away and asking for bikes and washing machines on ours... whats weird about that?
    am i missing something here??

maybe the people in my area only give away the good stuff???

also... i have been interested to read what you think makes a good request email, i thought giving your contact info and saying your available for pick up today if nessasary was quite helpful for people who want these goods out of the way as soon as possible?? i was surprised to read a few times that this apparently sounds greedy and you have ignored those replies...

and surely its hard not to sound greedy when your posting a list of things you want but would rather have for free than pay for! lol :o
