Can't help you with hotel, but can I recommend Arthurs Landing restaurant. It is Weehauken, over the river in New Jersey. Takes a while to get there, but, god it is worth it. Heres why:
    1) It is in New Jersey, smokers can have a fag in the bar. (Strange that when we mentioned having a fag while there, the americans got all funny, don't know why)
    2) The service is phenomenal.
    3) The food is phenomenal.
    4) The restaurant is not in New York city, but it has a view of the city. Possibly the best view of the city.
    5) The pound is so good against the greenback, it is a lot cheaper than the equivalent in London.
You need to take a taxi and a ferry, but it is worth it.
Also, we got to a rap club in Greenwich Village (Don't know the name). Even if you don't like rap, make the effort to try a club there. It was a real experience.

When we went in 2004 we stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel (made famous by the Glenn Miller tune Pennsylvania 65000). Central location, right opposite Madison Square Gardens, one block from the Empire State Building, Maces is round the corner, 10 minutes from Times Square and ideal for all transport connections. Ground Zero is just 15 minutes by bus.

Hotel is quite nice, though we did have to ask for a change of rooms due to the heater not working (Early Feb and snow on the ground) having said that the staff went out of their way to help; even waving a £17 fee for a 30 second telephone call to England. I'd give it 3 out of 5.

Sorry to say this, as I have not stayed there, but when I was looking for hotels - Trip Advisor was saying (well the reviews!) stay away from this one. Have a read up on hotels etc at https://www.tripadvisor.com and follow the links to New York. We got a good deal from https://www.travelzoo.co.uk (stayed at the Millenium Broadway).

We stayed in the Skyline Hotel in 2004 - large rooms, 2 large beds, clean recently refitted bathrooms. Its in the 'Hells Kitchen' area made famous by West Side Story. It's between Times Square (10 min walk) and the West side of Manhattan. Friendly staff, good breakfast - we didn't eat any main meals in the hotel though. Best bit of all was a roof top swimming pool - when you've swum in sight of the Empire State building, nothing else compares. Waking up, looking over the street and seeing New Yorks finest fire crews pulling up to get breakfast from the Deli over the road will live with me forever.....
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

We stayed in the Hotel Metro in Dec 04 and I can fully recommend it. It's on 34th st if I remember rightly literally straight accross the road from Macy's, 10 mins to times square,2 mins to Empire state biulding. The hotel have a rooftop area where you can Vie the Empire state biulding which is a phenominal site, you litterally have to crane your neck to look at the top it's THAT CLOSE!

The hotel has a retro feel to it and you get a complimentry continental breakfast.

Like a previous poster said do check Tripadvisor before booking anything, but do remember alot of the reviews on US hotels are written by Americans who expect VERY high standards, But then again so should we, should'nt we?

    Hope this helps,

    Pete.

I'd recommend doing a search on https://www.venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too.
Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W

    Hope that helps

Don't go the weekend the marathon is on. It's a really good atmosphere but flights and hotels will be pricey.
