I'd recommend doing a search on https://www.venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too. Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W

    Hope that helps

Im looking to leave on 25 Nov and return on 28 Nov this year. Preferabbly leaving Edinburgh - at a push Glasgow.2 adults going and the cheapest i can get is £580. Not bothered about it being direct, as long as its no more than one stop.
Flying into Newark int, and thats with Thomas cook.

    Can anyone find better?

Unfortunately, you're hitting a major holiday (Thanksgiving). That weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Wherever you book, don't leave it too long - those flights fill fast.

Am thinking of going to New York for a long weekend. Want to go sometime between mid September and end November. When is the best time to go?

Are you thinking best = cheapest, or least busy, or most attractions open, or nicest weather, or what?

Reasonable weather would be good but not essential, least busy if there is such a thing in NY but with most attractions open.

It's a tough one but based on your considerations:
    - weather will be best late September and Most of October (at a guess)
    - October can be busy because it's a popular conference month and end of November is Thanksgiving so it may be best to avoid that. I think the NY Marathon is in November too so you may want to avoid that weekend.
    - Places should be open all year round but if the things you want to do are weather-dependent then that may be a consideration (chance of better weather and longer days the earlier you go).

Personally I think October is a great time to visit NYC and I'm be heading there this October again!

Looks like it will be end Sept/early Oct. As you have obviously been before, are any airlines better than others to use, we would need to fly from Heathrow. Also what about places to stay? Want something quite nice but also quiet if possible. Am looking to book this as a surprise for my husband's 50th so any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if you think £299 is a good return fare for departures in September but Virgin Atlantic have a current offer (which needs to be booked by tomorrow night):

Personally if you're flying economy then there's not much to choose between the airlines. I fly out of any London airport to any New York airport but to NYC I will only take a direct flight. Direct flight options are Virgin, BA, Continental, United, American and Maxjet (all-business class airline that flies from Stansted). There may be some I have missed (eg Air India I think).

My best flights have been with Virgin so I speak highly of them but, to be honest, from London to New York, the cheapest direct flight normally gets my seat.

I have just booked flights to the US in mid-late September (actually flying out from Manchester to Chicago and back from Boston but the same principles still apply). I did a fair bit of searching and this is what I found:

Flying Mon-Thu is generally cheaper than Fri/Sat/Sun.

The American airlines are generally cheaper than British ones (BA, Virgin etc) although some say the service isn't as good, I don't know about that?

It is generally slightly cheaper to find the flight you want through Expedia, Travelocity etc but then go to the airline's own website to book direct (cut out the middleman...).
