https://www.continental.com/uk have had flights from Bristol BRS to NY Newark EWR so might be easier than going to London. I'd do 4 nights, because on your last day you have all day because most flights leave in the evening back to the UK.

You should bear in mind that hotel standards are pretty high in the US so a 3* might be good enough. The dollar is not so strong against the £ at the moment so it's a good time to get good value in the US. Also, if you are prepared to go a short way out of the centre you might fare better on the hotel, taxis are pretty cheap there.

I agree. I stayed at a 3* in New York in December 2002 and it was fantastic - as good as a 4* in Europe. Have you considered getting your hotel through Priceline? Some serious bargains can be had!

We booked on Christmas Eve,2005, when the world offers were on - £450 Heathrow to JFK for both of us, Maundy thursday returning the following tuesday. It might be worth waiting to book your flights?

Thank you so much for all your replies and suggestions. Will probably try to book accommodation through Priceline as have been successful in Europe, unless I see a deal I just cannot refuse! Just when I looked into it prices still seemed quite high in New York, although if I can get a good 3* then should make a difference. Would anyone recommend staying in New Jersey or do you really have to stay right in the middle of everything to enjoy NY to the max?

I suppose main area is flights, just wasn't sure how good a deal can be had, thanks for advice on waiting for a bit, that is the sort of thing I really need to know - have left myself enough time I hope to root out the best deal.

By the way, out of interest, what is the best deal anyone has had on flights to NY at any time of the year?

new jersey is as close to many parts of manhatten as other areas of manhattan.

Virgin actually match BA for price when it comes to flights now. I went end of Jan this year and flights were £250 per person return from Heathrow.

Hotels are a bigger issue. Staying in Manhattan is not cheap, by any stretch of the imagination. We hunted around for ages before finally settling on a hotel in the heart of Manhattan - not exactly cheap but a lot cheaper by most mid-Manhattan standards. I believe we paid about £700 for 7 nights altogether. Of course, that takes you over your £1000 budget. I would suggest finding a hotel somewhere on the Upper West Side/Harlem, get yourself a Metrocard while your there (about $20 each for up to 10 days) which will pay for all your buses and subway tickets (big, big saving).

If you're not sure about hotels, check them out on http://www.tripadvisor.com first - probably the best hotel review site out there since all the reviews are from people who have used the hotels, regular touristy types like you and me! Hehehe.

There's plenty more I could tell you about New York too - freebie's while you're there, places to visit on a budget, that sort of thing. I've done the trip 3 times now and always learning more about the place. If you want more info or to ask any questions, just PM me, I'd be glad to help.

Best Priceline deal (ever) is in New Jersey and is the
    Hyatt Regency on the Hudson
Look at this map for location and recent wins.
Use the website to ask questions\get a bid strategy
It is possible to get this for $55 + taxes :j

Cheapest flights I've had are around £250-300 with American Airlines

Do a search of the travel thread for more on New York, there's loads.

    The Hyatt looks lovely.

We found the NY hotels are actually not that great for the star rating (as opposed to being better, as another poster said). Next time, if I can't get the Hyatt ;), we will go for an appartment. They look better value for money. Try:

    Or do a google search.
