  • Jac - Thank you for your reply, will try your suggestions when the tv is returned if it is infact not faulty, beginning to think maybe it isn't the tv but the aerial signal :o Will send the dh up into the loft to try some wiggling  our loft is fairly empty ( I am obsessively ruthless, I love having clear outs!!!)

Something I had never considered, lightning hitting the aerial, sounds v scary.

    Hi MM.
We recently had signal problems with our freeview tv but somewhere in the settings there was an option which showed onscreen signal strength info etc. Ours was showing a weak signal so we literally moved the arial slightly until the signal went from maybe 40% up to around 80+%. (combined with moving 15 years of c**p inside the loft which was directly in line with the arial :o) When the arial was originally installed we had to 'best guess' its position based on picture quality ~ not an exact science ! We stopped other pixelating probs by using a better quality RF lead and not a home made version.

The arial is a proper external type just installed indoors as we were hit by lightning a couple of years ago and it took out our tv, video, cable box & stereo all in one go. (on a bank holiday too, I had to talk to the wife for entertainment :D)

Just as a warning to anyone thinking of buying a freeview style tv instead of using a seperate freeview box (to free up a plug-have less wires on show etc) you can't record to video/DVD as the signal goes one way only. i.e. you need the freeview bit before the telly not built into it)

Good luck with the next one, Jac.

It is possible to record from some TVs with built in Freeview tuners.

My mother has a Panasonic connected to her old VHS which she uses to record programmes from Freeview.

    Absolutely ~
If the tv has a SCART OUT then that can lead to a VCR or whatever
The downside is it tends to be only COMPOSITE and not RGB

True - given she is watching it on tapes that are a million years old (nearly) then she is fortunate to see anything anyway
