Thank you for the help, I think the reality is the cost of a bigger/better aerial.

One question though, referring to Alienriks post, why does the set top box pick up a good signal but the tv does not?

Some TV's and for that matter Freeview Receivers have more sensitive tuners fitted than others.

So some will work better on a weak signal than others.

Not really sure. My guess is that the cheapie freeview bozes are made however they like, possibly even including a booster within them in some cases (Ive certainly had one that did)

Tvs are made to much more exacting specifications ~ which means to work they need a decent signal, as thats what they expect to be fed with

Some tvs have boosters in them too (My old Pioneer has), which can be turned on or off at will

  • Might try aerial into freeview box and out of that to TV some boxes are passive passthrough and some might go through their amp ?

I should have done some research before I purchased the tv :o that will teach me!

Why not just continue to use the freeview box with a scart to the new TV as I suggested above?

It isn't your fault, there is no way of knowing if a receiver or TV has a sensitive tuner before buying it, other than having a home trial.

    It's just pot luck really.

Maybe the aerial isn't aligned properly or is slightly out which will make a difference.

True enough but it works just fine with the current set top box. Either the new TV is faulty or has a poor quality Freeview tuner. Apparently there is a replacement being sent so if the op tells us we'll all know which.

That is just pure baloney. The better quality the electronics the weaker the signal has to be to be good enough to work.
  • Kwikbreaks - we will continue to use the tv with the set top box until it is replaced, just annoying as it defeats the object of having a tv with Freeview in, as we wanted to mount it on the wall, will need a shelf for the Freeveiw box underneath! ;)

Debitcardmayhem - no need to use extra cable as the freeveiw box attached to the tv through a scart works perfectly.
